More than 60 high school teams flocked to the Javits Center in Manhattan on Sunday for the New York regional competition of FIRST Robotics. Just one, however, had the Popular Mechanics logo emblazoned on its basketball-playing robot.
We were proud to support the Lehman Lionics?Team 1230 from Lehman High School in the Bronx, N.Y. We covered their progress during the 2011 competition, and this year we supplied the team with some tools to help them build their machine.
The Lionics and the other 2012 FIRST teams were playing a game called "Rebound Rumble" this year. The teams formed alliances made of three robots each, and then competed in a sort of bot basketball game. First, the robots had to shoot baskets autonomously. Next, students assumed control and tried to score even more points. Finally, the three alliance members tried to balance their machines on a sort of see-saw at the end of each match, racking up a slew of points if they pulled it off. It was a major engineering challenge to make a robot capable of all these tasks.
In the video above, Lehman team members explain to us how they did it. Below, you see the Lionics' bot balancing on the bridge with alliance members Fe Maidens from the Bronx High School of Science.
Unfortunately, the Lionics were knocked out of the New York regional, and so they won't advance to the national competition in St. Louis next month. But they built a fine bot, and we're looking forward to seeing them compete again in a future FIRST competition.
