Second Cancer Often Same Type as the First, Study Finds (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Nov. 28 (HealthDay News) -- If cancer survivors develop a second cancer, it's most likely to be the same type of cancer as the first, researchers report.

About 15 percent of cancer survivors worldwide are diagnosed with a second primary cancer, the authors of the new report pointed out.

In the study, investigators analyzed data from the entire population of Denmark (7.5 million) from 1980 to 2007 and found that about 10 percent (765,255 people) had one or more diagnoses of primary cancer, for a total of 843,118 diagnoses.

Cancer survivors had a 2.2-fold risk of developing a second primary cancer of the same type as the first type of cancer, and a 1.1-fold risk of developing a different type of second primary cancer, the findings showed.

The risk varied, depending on the type of cancer. The risk of a second cancer of the same type was greatest among sarcoma survivors and lower among prostate cancer survivors. The risk of a second cancer of a different type was highest among larynx cancer survivors and lower among prostate cancer survivors, according to the report published Nov. 28 in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).

"The striking contrast between the 2.2-fold increased risk of a second primary cancer being the same type as the first and the 1.1-fold increased risk of it being different from the first cancer suggests that characteristics of the individual patient were involved," wrote study author Dr. Stig Bojesen of Herlev Hospital, Copenhagen University Hospital and the University of Copenhagen, and colleagues. "The risk of a second primary cancer seems to be specific to cancer type and is probably driven by the patient's genetic and lifestyle risk factors."

(AP) ? Hundreds of trucks carrying supplies to U.S.-led troops in Afghanistan backed up at Pakistani border crossings Sunday, leaving them vulnerable to militant attack a day after Islamabad closed the frontier in retaliation for coalition airstrikes that allegedly killed 24 Pakistani troops.

As Pakistan army chief Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kayani attended the funerals of the victims, including a major, the U.S. sought to minimize the fallout from the crisis, which plunged Washington's already troubled relationship with Islamabad to an all-time low.

Pakistan also ordered the U.S. to vacate an air base that is used by American drones to target al-Qaida and Taliban militants in the country's tribal region along the Afghan border. The U.S. has relied heavily on drone strikes in the past few years, partly out of frustration with Pakistan's refusal to target militants using its territory to stage attacks against American and NATO troops in Afghanistan.

There are forces working against a total rupture in the relationship. Pakistan still relies on billions of dollars in American military and civilian aid, and the U.S. needs Islamabad's help to push Afghan insurgents to engage in peace talks.

But tensions could rise further if militants unleash attacks against the stranded trucks ferrying NATO supplies to Afghanistan.

Suspected militants destroyed around 150 trucks and injured drivers and police a year ago after Pakistan closed one of its Afghan border crossings to NATO supplies for about 10 days in retaliation for a U.S. helicopter attack that accidentally killed two Pakistani soldiers.

The situation could be more dire this time because Pakistan, outraged at the alleged NATO attack before dawn Saturday, has closed both its crossings. Nearly 300 trucks carrying coalition supplies are now backed up at Torkham in the northwest Khyber tribal area and Chaman in southwestern Baluchistan province. Last year, Pakistan only closed Torkham.

"We are worried," said driver Saeed Khan, speaking by telephone from the border terminal in Torkham. "This area is always vulnerable to attacks. Sometimes rockets are lobbed at us. Sometimes we are targeted by bombs."

Khan and hundreds of other drivers and their assistants barely slept Saturday night because they were worried about potential attacks, he said.

Some drivers said Pakistan had sent paramilitary troops to protect their convoys since the closures, but others were left without any additional protection. Even those who did receive troops did not feel safe.

"If there is an attack, what can five or six troops do? Nothing," said Niamatullah Khan, a fuel truck driver who was parked with 35 other vehicles at a restaurant about 125 miles (200 kilometers) from Chaman.

NATO ships nearly 50 percent of its non-lethal supplies to its troops in Afghanistan through Pakistan. The trucks are periodically targeted by suspected militants as they travel through the country, and their drivers are sometimes killed. NATO has said these attacks do not significantly impact its ability to keep its troops supplied.

An official closely involved with the Afghan war said there will likely be no immediate negative effect from Pakistan's decision to close its border crossings. NATO has built up a large stockpile of military and other supplies that could enable operations to continue at their current level for several months, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

NATO has reduced the amount of non-lethal supplies it ships through Pakistan from a high of around 80 percent by using routes through Central Asia. The northern logistics link could be expanded to make up for the Pakistani closure, but it would leave NATO heavily dependent on Russia at a time when ties with Moscow are increasingly strained.

Some critical supplies, including ammunition, are airlifted directly to Afghan air bases.

Pakistan eventually relented and reopened Torkham last year after the U.S. apologized. But the number of alleged casualties is much higher this time. The relationship between the two countries has also severely deteriorated over the past year, especially following the covert U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden in a Pakistani garrison town in May. Islamabad was outraged because it wasn't told about the operation beforehand.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar told U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday that the alleged NATO attack negated all progress in improving the tattered alliance between the two countries.

She told Clinton in a phone call that the alleged NATO attack was unacceptable, showed complete disregard for human life and sparked rage within Pakistan, according to a press release issued by the Pakistani prime minister's office.

In addition to closing its border crossings, Pakistan gave the U.S. 15 days to vacate Shamsi Air Base in Baluchistan. The U.S. uses the base to service drones when they cannot return to their bases inside Afghanistan because of weather conditions or mechanical difficulty, U.S. and Pakistani officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters.

The Pakistani army said Saturday that NATO helicopters and fighter jets carried out an "unprovoked" attack on two of its border posts in the Mohmand tribal area before dawn, killing 24 soldiers and wounding 13 others.

Pakistan held funerals for the soldiers Sunday at the army's headquarters in Peshawar, the most important city in the country's northwest. Mourners said prayers in front of caskets wrapped in green and white Pakistani flags.

A spokesman for NATO forces, Brig. Gen. Carsten Jacobson, said Saturday that Afghan and coalition troops were operating in the border area of eastern Afghanistan when "a tactical situation" prompted them to call in close air support.

Afghan officials said Sunday that the call was made after Afghan soldiers came under fire. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the incident.

Jacobson told BBC television that it was "highly likely" that the airstrikes caused Pakistani casualties, but an investigation is being conducted to determine the details.

U.S. officials have expressed their sympathies over the incident and have promised to work closely with Pakistan as NATO carries out its investigation.

NATO's top official, Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, offered his "deepest condolences" and said the coalition was committed to working with Pakistan to "avoid such tragedies in the future."

"We have a joint interest in the fight against cross-border terrorism and in ensuring that Afghanistan does not once again become a safe haven for terrorists," Rasmussen said in Brussels.

Miley Cyrus, Adele on board for Bob Dylan cover set (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? What do Bob Dylan and Miley Cyrus have in common -- besides their perpetually chipper demeanor, of course?

They're both doing their part to benefit human rights organization Amnesty International on its 50th anniversary.

The human-rights organization is releasing a sprawling, four-CD collection, "Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International," on January 24, with the proceeds going to AI, according to numerous news reports.

The collection, which primarily consists of cover versions of tunes from the Dylan catalog, encompasses 80 artists. Among those taking a crack at Mr. Zimmerman's songbook: Adele, Sting, Elvis Costello, My Chemical Romance, Ke$ha and, yes, "Party in the USA" songbird Cyrus, who will contribute her take on Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go."

On the other end of the age spectrum, 92-year-old folk icon Pete Seeger will offer his version of "Forever Young," accompanied by a children's chorus.

Aside from Dylan's original 1964 rendition of "Chimes of Freedom," all of the songs will be new recordings.

'Community' Will Return To NBC Midseaon Primetime Lineup, Date Not Yet Set

With NBC and CBS announcing their midseason lineups earlier this week, it looks like the annual schedule shakeup is in full swing at the major networks. Since NBC unveiled its new lineup late Monday (Nov. 14) afternoon, there's been much speculation as to the fate of cult fave comedy "Community."

Cue funny cast and crew tweets. The show's executive producer Neil Goldman tweeted "Midseason schedule burn!" after the news broke, and series creator Dan Harmon responded "Streets ahold!"

Of course, this led actress Alison Brie to retweet her bosses comments with, "Troy and Abed in the...summer??" In true meta-humor fashion, the show's star Joel McHale then retweeted the entire dialog, adding, "Horsebot 3000 Noooo!"

Donald Glover then retweeted the humorous chain-tweet, adding, "Britta'd it." Oh snap. Did NBC really just Britta'd their midseason schedule?

Before you start sending paintballs of hope, "Community" fans, rejoice! The quirky comedy will return to NBC. "Community" will return at a date that has yet to be determined, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

However, the struggling comedy still remains on the bubble due to low ratings. It's fan base may be small, but it's fiercely loyal.

"Our fan base is mighty, thank God, and I think most of them are young, because no one appointment views the show, and I feel like, if they figure out a way to measure that and keep it all together, then our ratings might go up," Joel McHale told The Huffington Post before the Season 3 premiere. "But thank God the fans love the show. Hopefully it will keep us on the air, we'll see. I think if we get through this third season, we'll be okay -- oh, who the hell knows."

(AP) ? GOP Presidential candidate Michele Bachmann received an apology from an NBC executive after an off-color song was played during her appearance on Jimmy Fallon's "Late Night," her spokeswoman said late Wednesday.

The Minnesota congresswoman received a personal letter from NBC's vice president for late night programming, Doug Vaughan, a day after she appeared on the show. As Bachmann walked onstage, the show's band had played a snippet of a 1985 Fishbone song entitled "Lyin' Ass B----."

Vaughan wrote that the incident was "not only unfortunate but also unacceptable," Bachmann spokeswoman Alice Stewart told The Associated Press. She said Vaughn offered his sincerest apologies and said the band had been "severely reprimanded."

Fallon also apologized to Bachmann when they spoke earlier Wednesday, she said. He'd tweeted earlier, saying he was "so sorry about the intro mess."

"He was extremely nice and friendly and offered his apology, and she accepted it," Stewart said, adding that the comedian said he was unaware the band planned to play the song. "It's just unfortunate that someone had to do something so disrespectful."

Bachmann lashed out earlier Wednesday at NBC for not apologizing or taking immediate disciplinary action. In her first comments on the flap, Bachmann said on the Fox News Channel that the Fallon show band displayed sexism and bias by playing the song.

"This is clearly a form of bias on the part of the Hollywood entertainment elite," Bachmann said. She added, "This wouldn't be tolerated if this was Michelle Obama. It shouldn't be tolerated if it's a conservative woman either."

She went further on a national radio conservative radio show hosted by Michael Medved, calling the incident "inappropriate, outrageous and disrespectful."

On Fox, Bachmann expressed surprise that she's heard nothing from the TV network. She suggested that discipline for the show's band, The Roots, was in order. She said she believed Fallon's comments to be sincere.

One of Bachmann's congressional colleagues, New York Democrat Nita Lowey, had called on NBC to apologize for its "insulting and inappropriate" treatment of its guest.

An NBC spokeswoman didn't return a phone message from The Associated Press.

The Roots' bandleader, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, has said the song was a "tongue-in-cheek and spur-of-the-moment decision."

Bachmann, who is lagging in presidential polls, has spent the week promoting her new autobiography in national television interviews.

ZTE Smart Tab V55 tablet shows its face at the Bluetooth SIG

After flaunting its rear side at the FCC, ZTE's unannounced Smart Tab V55 has now given us a full frontal courtesy of the Bluetooth SIG. Aside from the flash of Honeycomb, the official listing tells us nothing beyond what we already know: there's a CDMA modem inside, along with WiFi and Bluetooth. Oh well, at least it's good to see that the slate is still alive and jumping through all the right hoops for a possible release early next year. Is there any hope that it'll pack Tegra 3, like that curious T98?

Epson PowerLite 1880 MultiMedia Projector

Any projector that boasts the 4,000 lumen rating that the Epson PowerLite 1880 MultiMedia Projector ($1399 direct) offers is an obvious candidate for a mid- to large-size conference room or classroom. At that level of brightness, you should be able to throw an image that's large enough to let you see details easily even from the back of the room and still stands up to ambient light. The PowerLite 1880 lives up to that expectation and adds high quality for data images as well, making it a particularly good choice for the job.

Built around an LCD-based, XGA (1,024 by 768) engine, the PowerLite 1880 weighs just 7.4 pounds. That's a pound heavier than the DLP-based WXGA (1,280 by 800) Optoma TW762 ($1,100 street, 3 stars), another 4,000 lumen projector that I recently reviewed. However, the two are close enough in weight to share essentially the same level of portability.

Projectors in this general weight class are most likely to wind up permanently installed or on a cart for moving from room to room. On the other hand, they're also light enough for carrying with you at least occasionally. Optoma even provides a soft carrying case with the TW762. Epson doesn't provide one for the 1880.

Of course, the 1880 is much brighter than most people need for a portable projector. For that matter, even the 3,000 lumen NEC Display Solutions NP-V300X ($779 direct, 3.5 stars) is bright for a portable. In that context, the lack of a carrying case isn't much of an oversight. Still, if you want to use the 1880 as an extraordinarily bright portable projector, you'll have to buy a carrying case separately.

Connections, Setup, and Brightness
Setting the 1880 up is mostly standard fare, with a manual focus and manual 1.6x zoom. One interesting extra is a top and bottom digital keystone adjustment slider to supplement the digital left and right keystone adjustment. (Keystone correction lets you adjust the image to maintain a rectangular shape.)

The back panel offers a typical assortment of connectors, including an HDMI 1.3 port for a computer or video source, two VGA inputs for computers or component video, both S-Video and composite video ports, and both USB Type A and USB Type B connectors. The first lets you read data from a USB key or connect a document camera. The second lets you connect to a computer, both for sending data images and for controlling the PC's mouse pointer from the projector's remote.

The 78-inch wide (98-inch diagonal) image I tested with was easily bright enough to stand up to the ambient light in a typical conference room or classroom. With the lights off, in fact, it was too bright for comfortable viewing, although switching to Eco mode, rated at 3,200 lumens, solved that problem. Note too that with Eco mode the rated lamp life increases by a third, from 3,000 hours to 4,000.

Data and Video Image Quality
The 1880 delivers high-quality data images. On our standard suite of DisplayMate tests, the color balance was off in projector's brightest mode, with the brightest shades of gray showing a yellow tinge. However, it's not unusual for projectors to have color balance problems in their brightest modes.

Much more significant is that the color balance issue did not show up with other settings, and the projector sailed through the rest of tests without a problem. Colors were vibrant and fully saturated, both black text on a white background and white text on a black background were crisp and readable even at the smallest sizes we test with, and the image was rock solid with an analog connection even on screens that tend to bring out pixel jitter.

Video quality was usable for movie-length sessions, which makes the 1880 above par for a data projector on this score. However, it's well short of what you'd want for watching your favorite movie or TV show. I saw a moderately serious problem with shadow detail (details based on shading in dark areas), with large areas of the screen turning into a solid black for scenes that tend to bring out the problem. On the other hand, the projector handled skin tones well, and I didn't see any posterization (colors changing suddenly where they should change gradually).

The fan noise also demands mention. I tend to be tolerant of fan noise, but found the 1880, with its 39 decibel rating, loud enough to catch my attention from my usual position when testing, sitting two or three feet from the projector. In Eco mode, rated at 35 decibels, it was easy to ignore. If you tend to be sensitive to fan noise, you may well consider this a problem if you're sitting near the projector.

On the plus side, the sound system, with its 10 watt mono speaker, is easily loud enough to fill a large conference room or classroom. The sound quality won't win any awards, but it's good enough so spoken words are understandable, which is more than you can say for many projectors in this weight class.

The Epson PowerLite 1880 offers far more to like than not, with a bright, high-quality data image, better quality video than most data projectors, better audio than most data projectors, and more. All of these pluses add up to making the projector our new Editors' Choice as an XGA projector for a large conference room or classroom.

Soyuz with three astronauts lands in Kazakhstan (AP)

MOSCOW ? A Russian Soyuz capsule carrying three astronauts returning from the International Space Station touched down safely in the snow-covered steppes of Kazakhstan early Tuesday morning.

NASA astronaut Michael Fossum, Russian cosmonaut Sergei Volkov and Satoshi Furukawa of Japan's JAXA space agency landed at the break of dawn some 90 kilometers (56 miles) north of the town of Arkalyk at 8:26 a.m. (0226 GMT) after spending 165 days in space.

The landing at steppe was close to its target point.

NASA spokesman Josh Byerly said in the NASA television broadcast that the recovery operation was swift despite the freezing weather and strong wind.

Video from the site showed the Soyuz capsule, blackened by the intense heat of re-entry, lying on its side as the astronauts were extracted.

The three men looked well and smiling, although Furukawa looked visibly exhausted. They were seated in chairs and wrapped in warm blankets to help them get adjusted to gravity after spending four months in space.

Valery Lyndin, spokesman for the Russian Mission Control Center, said all three astronauts are in good health.

NASA's Dan Burbank and Russians Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin remain onboard the International Space Station and are due to return to Earth in March. They arrived at the station on Wednesday. A launch next month will take the station back to its normal six-person crew.

Rush Limbaugh Tells 'The True Story Of Thanksgiving'

And now, a tradition as American as pumpkin pie: Rush Limbaugh's "true story of Thanksgiving."

Remember the story of the first Thanksgiving? Well, according to the story that Limbaugh tells almost every year on his radio show, history books, your parents and all the best elementary school plays left out one crucial part: socialism.

Yes, the pilgrims came to Plymouth, Massachusetts to seek religious freedom and build a new home. But, as Limbaugh explains, their plan was almost scuttled when a social contract they'd made backfired.

The original contract the Pilgrims had entered into with their merchant sponsors in London called for everything they produced to go into a common store, and each member of the community was entitled to one common share. All of the land that they cleared and the houses they built belonged to the community as well. Now, they were going to distribute it equally; all the land they cleared, all the houses they built belonged to the community. Nobody owned anything. They just had a share in it. It was a commune.

The story comes from a book Limbaugh wrote in the 1994, "See, I Told You So".

Limbaugh explains that the system disincentivized work ethic and "was as costly and destructive to the pilgrims as that first harsh winter." It was soon abolished. Limbaugh warns countries "experimenting with socialism" that they ought to take a leaf from the pilgrims.

"It didn't work, they nearly starved. It never has worked," he says.

So this year, you can add capitalism to your long list of things to be thankful for.

Criminal probe into online mortgage scams widens (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? A criminal investigation into mortgage swindlers has expanded beyond deceptive advertising on Google's Internet search engine to root out con artists who were luring their victims on Bing and Yahoo, too.

Monday's news of the widening probe confirmed that the Internet's three largest search engines had been turned into tools of prey for crooks looking to bilk homeowners scrambling to avoid foreclosure. The scams involved online ads making bogus promises of help people hold onto their homes under a government-backed program to modify mortgage payments.

After finding their victims using ads triggered by phrases such as "stop foreclosure," the swindlers extracted upfront fees or arranged to have the mortgage payments sent them without providing any assistance. The ruses had become increasingly common.

The crackdown had shuttered 125 mortgage scams by Monday, up from 85 last week, when the Office of the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program announced it was cleaning up the misconduct on Google. The U.S. Treasury Department division said many of the con artists bought ads on all three search engines.

The identities of the alleged swindlers haven't been disclosed, partly because the criminal investigation is still open. A spokesman for agency steering the investigation declined to provide any further details Monday.

Like Google Inc., Microsoft Corp.'s Bing search engine agreed to stop accepting ads from hundreds of Internet advertisers and agencies tied to the scams. The ban also applies to Yahoo Inc., because it depends on Microsoft to sell its search advertising as part of a revenue-sharing partnership.

"Microsoft is committed to preventing fraud within its advertising network and online community and is working closely with the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program to help tackle the problem of fraudulent mortgage-modification advertising," the software maker said in a statement.

The mortgage scams are the latest example of marketing malfeasance on large Internet advertising networks. Critics have complained the largely automated systems for buying ads next to Internet search results are vulnerable to abuse and that the companies running them aren't doing enough to screen the marketing pitches before they appear on websites.

The criminal investigation into fraudulent mortgage ads is surfacing three months after Google agreed to pay $500 million to avoid prosecution in Rhode Island for profiting from online ads from Canadian pharmacies that illegally sold drugs in the U.S.

Consumer Watchdog, a group that published a study about mortgage ad scams nine months ago, is calling for criminal charges and financial penalties against the major search engines in the current investigation.

"These Internet company executives were active enablers of fraud against vulnerable homeowners," said John Simpson, director of Consumer Watchdog's privacy project. "They cannot be allowed to benefit from these ill-gotten gains."

?Super? Committee ? Lack of Progress ... - Crackerjack Finance

The US ?Super Committee? has failed to make any progress on the sole task it was created for: deficit reduction. It now appears probable that there will be an announcement today stating the committee has ?failed to reach its mandated goal of reducing deficits over the next 10-years by $1.2 trillion dollars?. An announcement of this sort would be particularly discouraging because the committee looks unable to achieve even partial success. At a time when the global economy and financial markets are experiencing a crisis of confidence in the future, this result is a major letdown.

The US economy has been incredibly resilient despite the confidence-sapping political ineptitude, and the political/financial breakdown in Europe. The main issue with a potential ?lack of result? announcement from the Super Committee is not so much the immediate real impact to the economy, but the lack of clarity with regard to the future. The more uncertain the future economic environment, the more likely businesses are to defer hiring decisions and consumers are to simply retrench. The lack of progress increases the prospect of a US Sovereign debt downgrade from Moody?s. The ratings organization stated that a lack of progress would be ?informative but not decisive?. There is also the risk of an additional downgrade coming from Standard & Poors.

If there is absolutely no agreement or compromise, then there would be automatic cuts implemented in 2013. Already, the discussion has turned towards potential for another legal go-around. If the committee does indeed have a complete fail, there will be increasing risks to the 2012 economic environment well before any automatic cuts get implemented. The most important item remaining will be whether to extend the 2% payroll tax cuts for 2012. If congressional leaders can?t make any progress on deficit reduction, it seems likely that there will be difficulty reaching a compromise on extending payroll tax cuts in 2012. Given the fragility of our recovery and the crisis risk in Europe, the US economy is in the unfortunate circumstance where it would be very difficult to absorb payroll tax increases in 2012. It would be a material negative for the economy and the markets if the 2% payroll tax cuts aren?t extended. The drag would likely amount to around a 75 basis point hit to US GDP growth. In an environment of 9% unemployment and 1.5-2.0% GDP, it would be tremendously unfortunate to see GDP growth cut in half because of a lack of leadership and vision out of Washington. This will increasingly become a very important topic through the month of December.

`Dancing' finals: It's anyone's mirrorball (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? No one has the mirrorball in the bag.

The glittery "Dancing With the Stars" trophy will be awarded during Tuesday's season finale, and any one of the three finalists ? Rob Kardashian, Ricki Lake and J.R. Martinez ? could easily waltz away with it.

Kardashian, 24, comes into the final episode in first place. The reality star has shown steady development throughout the season, and he and professional partner Cheryl Burke dazzled on the penultimate dance-off with an elegant waltz and a rip-roaring, swing-inspired freestyle routine that judges rewarded with a perfect score.

"I couldn't have asked for a better ending of the season," Kardashian said Monday. "We got our first perfect score. We're in first place. We did it with the most crucial dance, which is the freestyle. It's just surreal and I still can't even believe it."

Lake and Martinez, who have each topped the judges' leaderboard throughout the 10-week competition, are tied for second place.

Lake said she's pleased with what she's accomplished on the show, regardless of the final outcome. She earned high scores all season, dropped more than 25 pounds and performed some impressive dance moves.

"I've come way further than I ever thought or anyone else thought, so, I don't expect to win," the 43-year-old TV personality said. "I'm just happy to be among these two other guys. J.R. and Rob really have proven themselves. They're amazing people and I'm just happy to be one of them."

Lake's professional partner, Derek Hough, said they've had "a winning season."

"I feel like we can walk away (Tuesday), win or lose, and say, `Yeah, we won,'" he said.

Martinez and partner Karina Smirnoff are happy about the tricky stunts they pulled off in their freestyle routine ? which earned a perfect score ? but they'll be even happier if they win the trophy Tuesday.

"I think we have a great shot at it," said Martinez, 28, an actor and Iraq war veteran. "It would be an amazing thing. It'd be her first mirrorball trophy, which she deserves, and it would be my first, of course. We both want to win it for each other."

Smirnoff, who has been on the hit ABC show for 10 seasons, said taking the title would be like "a perfect ending to a perfect story."

"With everything we went through... it's like this mirrorball would justify everything," she said. "No matter what happens, I feel like it has been such a fulfilling experience overall. But the mirrorball trophy would make it that much better. It's the truth."

The three couples will perform their favorite dance of the season for another score from the judges before the third-place finalists are eliminated. The remaining two pairs will compete in one final routine for the season 13 title.

Viewer votes count for half of each contestant's overall score, but the last chance to cast votes was Monday.

The two-hour season finale is also set to feature music by Lady Antebellum and is expected to include appearances by this season's former contestants: TV personalities Nancy Grace and Carson Kressley, reality star Kristin Cavallari, actors David Arquette and Elisabetta Canalis, singer Chynna Phillips, activist Chaz Bono, basketball player Metta World Peace and soccer star Hope Solo.

'Freedom, freedom': Cops, protesters battle in Cairo

Firing tear gas and rubber bullets, Egyptian riot police on Sunday clashed for a second day with thousands of rock-throwing protesters demanding that the ruling military quickly announce a date to hand over power to an elected government.

The police battled an estimated 5,000 protesters in and around central Cairo's Tahrir Square, birthplace of the 18-day uprising that toppled authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak in February. Tear gas filled the air as protesters, many chanting "freedom, freedom," pelted the police with rocks.

Sunday's clashes, which came a day after two people were killed and hundreds wounded in similar violence in the capital and other cities, are stoking tensions eight days before the start of the country's first post-Mubarak parliamentary elections. Public anger has risen over the slow pace of reforms and apparent attempts by Egypt's ruling generals to retain power over a future civilian government.

"We have a single demand: The marshal must step down and be replaced by a civilian council," said protester Ahmed Hani, referring Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, Egypt's military ruler and Mubarak's longtime defense minister.

"The violence yesterday showed us that Mubarak is still in power," said Hani, who was wounded in the forehead by a rubber bullet. He spoke over chants of "freedom, freedom" by hundreds of protesters around him.

Rocks, shattered glass and trash covered most of the ground in and around Tahrir early Sunday, while a cloud of white smoke caused by the use of dozens of tear gas shells hung in the air. Several hundred protesters were camping out on the lawn of the square's traffic island, and protesters manning barricades into the square checked the IDs of anyone entering the plaza.

A blaze broke out around midnight at the huge Mogamma state administration building overlooking Tahrir.

'Brutality'
The windows of the main campus of the American University in Cairo, which overlooks the square, were shattered and stores were shuttered. "The marshal is Mubarak's dog," said one of a fresh crop of graffiti in the square.

Yahya el-Sawi, a 21-year-old university student, said he was enraged by the sight of riot police beating up protesters already hurt in an earlier attack by the security forces. "I did not support the sit-in at the beginning, but when I saw this brutality I had to come back to be with my brothers," he said.

Many of the protesters had red eyes and coughed incessantly. Some wore surgical masks to fend off against the tear gas. A few fainted, overwhelmed by the gas.

"I tell you do not leave the square. This square will lead the way from now on," presidential candidate Hazem Salah Abu Ismail, a hardline Islamist, told a group of protesters early on Sunday. "Tomorrow the whole of Egypt will follow your lead."

Sunday's clashes, which were mostly on a road leading from Tahrir to the Interior Ministry, appeared likely to grow.

Social networking
Protesters were using social networking websites to call on Egyptians to join them, and there were reports of several demonstrations headed to the square, including one from Cairo University.

The military, which took over from Mubarak, has repeatedly pledged to hand over power to an elected government but it has yet to set a specific date. According to one timetable floated by the military, the handover will take place after presidential elections are held late next year or early in 2013. The protesters say this is too late and accuse the military of dragging its feet. They want a handover to take place immediately after the end of parliamentary elections in March.

On Saturday, police fired rubber bullets, tear gas and beat protesters with batons, clearing the square at one point and pushing the fighting into surrounding side streets of downtown Cairo.

A 23-year-old protester died from a gunshot, said Health Ministry official Mohammed el-Sherbeni. At least 676 people were injured, he said. Another protester was killed in Alexandria, where clashes also took place, said a security official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to journalists.

After nightfall, protesters swarmed back into Tahrir in the thousands, and running battles with the police in the streets took place throughout the night. Acrid smoke of tires set ablaze mixed with the stinging white smoke of tear gas.

The government urged protesters to clear the square.

A member of the military council, Maj. Gen. Mohsen el-Fangari, said protesters' calls for change ahead of the election were a threat to the state.

"What is the point of being in Tahrir?" he asked, speaking by phone to a private TV channel. "What is the point of this strike, of the million marches? Aren't there legal channels to pursue demands in a way that won't impact Egypt ... internationally?"

"The aim of what is going on is to shake the backbone of the state, which is the armed forces."

In a warning, he said, "If security is not applied, we will implement the rule of law. Anyone who does wrong will pay for it."

Saturday's confrontation was one of the few since the uprising to involve the police, which have largely stayed in the background while the military took charge of security. There was no military presence in and around the square on Saturday or on Sunday. The black-clad police were a hated symbol of Mubarak's regime.

The army won popular backing during Mubarak's overthrow for maintaining order and pledging to hand power to an elected government, but support has ebbed over its use of military trials for civilians and suspicion that it wants to continue to wield the levers of power after a new government is sworn in.

Story: Egypt in uproar after blogger posts nude photos

Liberal groups are dismayed by the military trials of thousands of civilians and the army's failure to scrap a hated emergency law.

Islamists eyeing a strong showing in the next parliament suspect the army council wants to curtail their influence and is maneuvering to stay in power from behind the scenes.

Analysts say Islamists could win 40 percent of parliament seats, with a big portion going to the Muslim Brotherhood.

The nation's weather (AP)

A cold front will bring rain and snow to the Great Lakes and Midwest, with showers and thunderstorms developing across the South.

A low pressure area and associated cold front will move quickly eastward from the upper Midwest into the Great Lakes and the Northeast. The system will continue to push a cold front eastward, spreading down the Ohio River Valley and the Tennessee Valley into the lower Mississippi River region Sunday.

This system will draw ample moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, allowing scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop from the Tennessee Valley to the lower Mississippi River. Some storms may turn severe with strong winds, hail and heavy rains. In the North, most of the Midwest, Northeast, and Great Lakes will see rain showers. Downwind shores of the Great Lakes may see some lake effect snow showers.

Out West, a low pressure system heading down the West Coast will turn southeastward, pushing a cold front onshore. This moisture-laden system will be capable of producing some heavy rains with heavy snow in the Sierras. Rainfall totals will range from a half of an inch to an inch, while snowfall totals will range from 2 to 4 inches and up to 8 inches at the highest elevations. Elsewhere, the Pacific Northwest as well as the northern and central Rockies will dry out as a higher pressure area sets in.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states ranged Saturday from a morning low of -9 degrees at Lewistown, Mont., to a high of 93 degrees at Alice, Texas.
