BEIRUT (AP) ? The Syrian government will not pull troops from cities and towns engulfed by the country's unrest before life returns to normal in these areas, a high-ranking official said, as activists reported fresh violence that claimed the lives of more than two dozen people across the nation Saturday.

The statement by Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdessi was the first response to an appeal by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan to Syrian authorities to stop military activities as "the stronger party" in a "gesture of good faith" to the lightly armed opposition.

It suggests that any implementation of Annan's plan to end the conflict ? which Syrian President Bashar Assad has accepted ? will be a long and complicated process. Damascus appears to be playing for time by indicating broad agreement with the plan but then quibbling over or ignoring the details.

One of the centerpieces of the plan is the withdrawal of Syrian troops from cities, but Makdessi told state TV late Friday that the military is only in populated areas "in a state of self defense and protecting civilians."

"The Syrian army is not happy to be present in residential areas," Makdessi said . "Once peace and security prevail in these areas, the army will not stay nor wait for Kofi Annan to leave. This is a Syrian matter."

Makdessi also said it has defeated those seeking to topple the Syrian regime.

"The battle to bring down the state in Syria has already ended and the battle of reinforcing stability has started," he said, an apparent reference to recent gains by Syrian troops in their crackdown on the rebels.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, meanwhile, discussed with Saudi officials ways to pressure Assad to end the bloodshed.

"I believe we all agree on the need for an immediate cease-fire to the systematic killing," Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said at a joint news conference with Clinton.

He said arming the Syrian opposition is a "duty" so that it can defend itself against Assad's onslaught.

Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar have spoken about possible military intervention, from arming Syria's badly overmatched rebels to creating safe zones from which the rebels can operate.

Washington remains opposed to arming Syria's rebels, fearing a military escalation could lead to all-out civil war and play into Assad's hands, considering his vastly more powerful military.

Syria's uprising began a year ago with peaceful protests against Assad's regime. In the face of a fierce crackdown, the uprising has become increasingly militarized and opposition groups now say their only hope is to drive out Assad.

The U.N. estimates more than 9,000 people have been killed in the fighting.

International opponents of Assad are struggling to pin down a strategy on Syria, as the peace plan put forward by Annan is failing to get off the ground.

Annan's six-point proposal to end the violence, which has been accepted by Assad, requires the government to immediately pull troops and heavy weapons out of cities and towns, and abide by a two-hour halt in fighting everyday to allow humanitarian access and medical evacuations.

"The government must stop first and then discuss a cessation of hostilities with the other side," Annan spokesman Ahmad Fawzi told reporters in Geneva on Friday. "We are appealing to the stronger party to make a gesture of good faith ... The deadline is now."

Assad promised on Thursday to "spare no effort" to make sure Annan's plan succeeds. But he demanded that armed forces battling his regime commit to halting violence as well.

Many Syrians are frustrated at the lack of will for a foreign military intervention and are deeply skeptical Assad will carry out Annan's peace plan, saying the president has accepted it just to win time while his forces continue their bloody campaign to crush the uprising.

Syria's state-run news agency SANA said Syrian troops foiled an infiltration attempt by gunmen from Lebanon into a village near the western town of Talkalakh. SANA said troops confiscated weapons and killed and wounded some of the infiltrators as others fled back into Lebanon.

In other violence, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said government troops killed at least 25 people Saturday, mostly in the southern province of Daraa, the northwestern province of Idlib and the central region of Homs.

The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said security forces killed 24 people Saturday nine of them in Idlib and eight in Homs.

The Observatory reported shooting at a funeral in the posh Damascus neighborhood of Kfar Souseh of a man who was shot dead Friday by security forces. It had no word on casualties.

For the U.S. and its allies, Syria is proving an especially murky conflict with no easy solutions. Assad's regime is one of Washington's clearest foes, a government that has long been closely allied with Iran and anti-Israel groups Hamas and Hezbollah, which the U.S. considers terrorist. Saudi Arabia and other Sunni-led Gulf countries are eager to see Assad's fall in hopes of breaking Syria out of its alliance with their regional rival, Shiite-majority Iran.

Clinton was flying on Saturday from Saudi Arabia to Turkey for Sunday's 60-nation gathering of the "Friends of the Syrian People" in Istanbul.

She said officials meeting in Turkey would discuss "additional steps to increase pressure on the regime, provide humanitarian assistance despite the efforts of the regime to block access and advance plans for an inclusive, democratic and orderly transition that addresses the aspirations of the Syrian people."

Finding the Best Contact Lenses - Health And Fitness Tips

For people that wear contact lenses, it is nice to know that more varieties are being made. Where you buy your contacts, check out the selections that are available for you. You can purchase your contact lenses at a variety of online websites and brick-and-mortar stores. To help you find the best deals on contact lenses, continue reading what is presented in this article.

As you probably know, you can order almost anything on the Internet, including contact lenses. There is a great deal of trepidation with many people in regard to ordering anything online which should not be a concern if you use the proper safety practices before ordering. If you are surfing online, and find an eye contact site, don?t make your initial order straightaway. Websites that have competitive prices, and a great reputation, are probably worth looking into in regard to your initial purchase. After you have checked the company out, you can then use them continuously if they are reliable. What makes this so convenient is that you can place your order at any time and get them shipped whenever you want.

Your eyes are the first thing people see when they look at you which is why I choose where to buy circle contact lenses. They are a good option for special occasions or events. One new color equals one new appearance.

Contacts are becoming more popular as a remedy for eye problems that many people have today. One of the most widespread problems that people have as they get older is astigmatism; this can actually be corrected with what are called toric lenses. There are two varieties of toric lenses: hard and soft. People that get these particular lenses must pay a little more because they are specifically created to help their condition. Anyone that has ever had presbyopia knows that this particular condition (which prevents you from seeing objects nearby) can be cured with monovision contact lenses that are exclusively made for your eyes. Anyone that cannot read small print may be suffering from this condition. With monovision lenses, one eye is fit with a near lens, and the other with a distance lens so that both eyes are able to see clearly both near and far.

Lots of people prefer contacts for their convenience and because they are a way to better your vision, although they can also let you have a different eye color or at least give you that appearance. Truth be told, there are some people with 20/20 vision who actually wear contact lenses because of this. You can choose from an array of contacts in many different colors.

If you just want to brighten your true eye color, without completely changing it, you can opt for enhancement tint color contact lenses. Although, opaque tint color contact lenses will totally change the color of your eyes. Usually individuals who have dark colored eyes, but would like to have blue or green eyes make this decision. While you might have perfect vision, you should still have an eye exam because you need to make sure that your colored contact lenses fit the right way.

If you?re used to wearing regular glasses and are considering contacts, there are some definite advantages to this choice. An adjustment period of time is always going to occur once you switch from regular glasses to wear contacts everyday. One positive aspect of wearing contacts is that they do not impede your actions while doing your daily routines. They generally offer you clearer sight. If you drive a lot with your glasses, they may fog up. This will not happen with contacts. Contacts can also help you if you are worried about how you will look when you wear your glasses. You should certainly consider wearing contact glasses for these reasons.

Find the right contact lenses is a matter of shopping around and also getting the most appropriate type of lens for your needs. Your optometrist will be able to guide you toward the best contact lenses. Hard lenses, and soft lenses, can be pigmented if you want them to be. It just depends on which ones make sure eyes feel more comfortable. When you go out to get your contact lenses, consider these helpful tips that we have presented.

Evanescence, Green Day, Tokio Hotel, My Chemical Romance: Musical March Madness Final Four!

After three weeks of battles, one of these four will take home the MMM title - voting in all Final Four matchups is now open!
By James Montgomery

Well, that was intense. After 48 hours of epic Elite 8 battles, we've reached the Final Four of MTV's Musical March Madness. And while making it this far is certainly an accomplishment, there's not exactly a whole lot of time to sit around and savor it.

That's because voting in our Final Four matchups is already under way, and polls will remain open until Sunday (April 1) at midnight ET. You've carried your favorite band to the cusp of championship glory, but can you help push them over the top?

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket!

Let's take a look at the four bands still standing in MMM: true, tourney-tested squads that have survived three weeks of brutal back-and-forth battles just to make it to this point. In a way, they're all champions; too bad only one will actually be able to call themselves that.

#5 My Chemical Romance vs. #5 Green Day

My Chem are the champions of the Midwest region, having survived a furious rally from upset-minded Metallica in the Elite 8 (seriously, with more than 600,000 votes cast, MCR won by 400). Meanwhile, defending MMM champs Green Day had to stage a serious comeback of their own against Adam Lambert, who led until late Thursday before succumbing to GD's full-court press. At this point of the tournament, there truly are no easy matchups, and this one, well, it's going to be a war. Both bands have been put through the wringer, and both know how to win a close contest; can My Chemical Romance finally take home the MMM title (they've been in the Final Four three consecutive years), or will Green Day make history as the first band to repeat as champions? All we can do is wait and see ...

#1 Evanescence vs. #12 Tokio Hotel

Speaking of history: Congratulations to Evanescence, the first #1 seed to make the MMM Final Four. They've battled hard throughout the tournament, having bested tough foes like Paramore, Linkin Park and Dave Matthews Band just to reach this point. As a reward, they draw perhaps the toughest opponent in the entire field: Tokio Hotel, a band that's steamrolled their way through the competition. They've throttled all challengers and even got revenge (big time) against rivals Coheed and Cambria in the Elite 8. No two bands have enjoyed as much fan support in MMM 2012, which is why we're certain this one's going to be a classic. And not to go out on a limb here, but we suspect the winner of this one may very well be the band hoisting the championship trophy next week. No pressure or anything.

Is your favorite band still alive in the Final Four? Help carry them to the championship — or assist in shattering some dreams — by voting now. Polls close Sunday at midnight, so get cracking — we're so close to crowning a champ!

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket!

MTV's 2012 Musical March Madness tournament reaches the Elite Eight! Voting runs until midnight ET on Thursday, March 29, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act is still alive, it'll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it only gets more difficult from here on out.

If you?re a Dr. Oz fan, you may have heard of the latest news in weight loss ? raspberry ketone. The supplement, according to a weight-loss expert on The Dr. Oz Show , will help your body ?think it?s thin? and burn body fat in as little as five days of taking the supplement daily. Raspberry ketone pills are derived from raspberries, which are known for having metabolism-boosting properties . According to Dr. Oz?s show, raspberry ketone pills contain the concentrated benefits of 90 pounds of raspberries, so just 100 mg a day of the supplement will supposedly help your body burn fat. So, does it work? Studies have found that it does (at least in mice!). One study found that mice fed a high-fat diet did not gain weight after regularly being given a dose of the supplement; another study found that raspberry ketone, in mice, increased the amount of adiponectin , a hormone that ?naturally tricks your body into acting like it?s thin,? according to Dr. Oz. In general, raspberry ketone pills are known to be safe , but of course finding the right, trustworthy brand is key (especially since dietary supplements are not regulated by the FDA), and it?s important to note that no long-term studies have been done in humans. And while Dr. Oz touts the benefits of raspberry ketone, even he is quick to note that taking the supplement isn?t a substitute for diet and exercise, but rather a way to help ?get you over the hump? when starting a weight-loss routine. Are you buying the so-called benefits of raspberry ketone? Let us know if you?ve tried it and what you think in the comments! Source: Flickr User Muffet Have You Ever Taken Raspberry Ketone? Yes ? With nearly 5,000 startups currently in business -- second only to the U.S. -- the country's pool of entrepreneurial talent has been attracting Western businesses and entrepreneurs for years. But, in January, Gil Ben-Artzy and Shuly Galili launched a startup accelerator that aims to reverse this trend in favor of Israeli entrepreneurs, by bringing the country's promising founders to Silicon Valley to help them kick start their businesses. And, today, after 10 weeks of mentoring, networking, and iterating, UpWest Labs is revealing the six graduates of its inaugural batch.

Sales & Marketing Strategy Conclusion: Frequently Asked Questions

What are some ways that I can quickly increase sales?

This is a tough question that is very dependent on your business. There are many ways to both motivate your customers and to motivate your internal sales force. Increasing sales is a general term; you must first set a goal of how you wish to increase sales. Is it a straight volume increase of your existing offering? Perhaps you want to increase the cross-selling of software applications and peripherals to increase your profit margins. Regardless of the goal, be sure to inspire your customers and sales people to move to action today. Find out what your sales representatives and customers need to drive them to your desired action and then develop a mutually beneficial incentive to drive them to that action. Increasing your value-adds, rebates, bundles and internal sales incentives are all good ways to give your sales numbers a boost. The key is defining a balance where you are still profitable while allotting for a volume increase.

Should I outsource my sales/customer service departments?

Outsourcing your infrastructure can often save your organization money; however, it?s important to look at the following things:

  • Will my level of service increase or decrease?
  • Will I spend more time educating and managing an outsourced department?
  • What control will I lose and what will I gain from outsourcing?
  • Are there any competitive risks associated with outsourcing?

Evaluate carefully how an outsourced department will impact your business, as larger firms are moving their service departments off-shore. Watch and learn from their successes and failures and determine for yourself if this would hold a positive impact on cost-savings both short-term and long-term.

Which marketing vehicles have the most impact for my business?

The answer is all of them. Each marketing vehicle plays an intricate role in creating an impact for your business; however, depending upon your message and medium (as well as the type of industry you serve), the marketing vehicles and their value to your organization will change. For example; if you are selling to an industry that is a bit more tech savvy, you may want to try and implement a more technical approach. This may include targeted emails, electronic forms to gather information and online webinar/seminars. However, if your primary demographic is the green industry (plant growers, landscapers, etc.) these marketing tactics would be rendered useless, as they primarily rely on hardcopy items and fax machines for communication.

Your message also speaks more clearly depending upon the medium; for example, a simple statement on a simple postcard ?SAVE 25% TODAY? will go a long way if you are targeting the right audience. If you were developing a technology newsletter where the information could change daily, it would be more intelligent to develop an electronic newsletter or website where the content is more dynamic.

The final answer is?it depends.

It depends on your message. It depends on how you wish to communicate that message. It depends on who is the target audience who will be receiving that message. It depends on the call-to-action (incentive to move them to action) that you have in your message. Utilize trial and error; measure what works and discard those things that do not work with the dependencies in mind.

What is one-to-one marketing?

One-to-one marketing is a very useful tactic. With the advancement of technology, we are now in the age of marketing where we can develop a message that personally relates to specific demographic groups. It?s as simple as adding the name of the intended recipient to an email blast, or as complicated as using a business intelligence engine to craft a message specific only to the recipient. Here is a good example:

  • Message one: Dear valued customer, We are offering great rebates and discounts on select computer peripherals and software. Hurry, the sale ends this month! Come see what we have in store for you!
  • Message two: Dear John, We noticed that you recently purchased an HP Pavilion Notebook on September 14th. We hope you have enjoyed your purchase. For being our valued customer, we would like to offer you a 10% off coupon the next time you come into our store to purchase any one of these accessories for your notebook: HP Pavilion Power Supply HP Pavilion Docking Station Targus Cooling Lap Station 3COM 802.11g wireless PCMCIA card

Again, thank you for your recent purchase, we want to ensure you receive the highest quality of service from Profit Corporation, so please feel free to contact us at any time.

Message two specifies the product that the customer purchased and offers suggestive products that he/she can actually use for that product. Expect incremental returns from making the investment to implement one-to-one marketing and look for future modules in our Profit Maps courseware to explain this in more detail.

'Lucy' lived among close cousins: Discovery of foot fossil confirms two human ancestor species co-existed

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? A team of scientists has announced the discovery of a 3.4 million-year-old partial foot from the Woranso-Mille area of the Afar region of Ethiopia. The fossil foot did not belong to a member of ?Lucy?s? species, Australopithecus afarensis, the famous early human ancestor. Research on this new specimen indicates that more than one species of early human ancestor existed between 3 and 4 million years ago with different methods of locomotion.

The analysis will be published in the March 29, 2012 issue of the journal Nature.

The partial foot was found in February 2009 in an area locally known as Burtele.

?The Burtele partial foot clearly shows that at 3.4 million years ago, Lucy?s species, which walked upright on two legs, was not the only hominin species living in this region of Ethiopia,? said lead author and project leader Dr. Yohannes Haile-Selassie, curator of physical anthropology at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History. ?Her species co-existed with close relatives who were more adept at climbing trees, like ?Ardi?s? species, Ardipithecus ramidus, which lived 4.4 million years ago.?

The partial foot is the first evidence for the presence of at least two pre-human species with different modes of locomotion contemporaneously living in eastern Africa around 3.4 million years ago. While the big toe of the foot in Lucy?s species was aligned with the other four toes for human-like bipedal walking, the Burtele foot has an opposable big toe like the earlier Ardi.

?This discovery was quite shocking,? said co-author and project co-leader Dr. Bruce Latimer of Case Western Reserve University. ?These fossil elements represent bones we?ve never seen before. While the grasping big toe could move from side to side, there was no expansion on top of the joint that would allow for expanded range of movement required for pushing off the ground for upright walking. This individual would have likely had a somewhat awkward gait when on the ground.?

The new partial foot specimen has not yet been assigned to a species due to the lack of associated skull or dental elements.

The fossils were found below a sandstone layer. Using the argon-argon radioactive dating method, their age was determined to be younger than 3.46 million years, said co-author Dr. Beverly Saylor of Case Western Reserve University. ?Nearby fossils of fish, crocodiles and turtles, and physical and chemical characteristics of sediments show the environment was a mosaic of river and delta channels adjacent to an open woodland of trees and bushes,? said Saylor. ?This fits with the fossil, which strongly indicates a hominin adapted to living in trees, at the same time ?Lucy? was living on land.?

?The LEED green building program helps homeowners measure green home performance across a range of categories, and products play an important role in achieving certification,? said Nate Kredich, vice president of Residential Development at USGBC. ?This database represents just one of the many ways in which The Home Depot is advancing sustainable, efficient and healthy homes by supporting green building and green products.? ?As the world?s largest home improvement retailer, we want to show our customers that building green can be easy and affordable,? said Lindsay Chason, senior manager of Environmental Innovation at The Home Depot. ?We have innovative, environmentally-friendly products that make LEED certification simpler. Now through our partnership with U.S. Green Building Council and their LEED for Homes program, we are simplifying the process of bringing healthier, greener homes to reality.?

The green housing market is growing rapidly, having tripled since 2008. Green homes, which comprised 17% of new residential construction last year, are expected to increase by 29% to 38% of the market by 2016, according to a report last week by McGraw-Hill Construction, a part of The McGraw-Hill Companies.

LEED-certified homes are energy efficient, conserve water and vital resources, and integrate environmentally preferred products into the design and construction of a home. Nearly 18,000 housing units have received LEED for Homes certification, a number that has seen significant growth in recent years. Fifty percent of LEED for Homes projects are classified in the affordable housing sector, echoing a trend found in last week?s report from The National Association of Home Builders and the Wells Fargo Housing Opportunity Index (HOI). The data shows that nationwide housing affordability rose to a record level during the fourth quarter of 2011.

The USGBC and The Home Depot product database was a subject of intense interest during Modernism Week in California last month and debuted as part of the TED Conference during which Steve Glenn, CEO of LivingHomes, a LEED home builder since 2006 and the builder of the first LEED Platinum home in the nation, showcased LivingHome C6. C6 is the first affordable housing line from the pre-fabricated builder. Once sited in their final locations, C6 homes are designed to meet the requirements of the LEED for Homes rating system. The home was designed as part of a new partnership with Make It Right, a nonprofit founded by Brad Pitt and renowned architect William McDonough to build 150, Cradle to Cradle inspired LEED Platinum homes in New Orleans? Lower Ninth Ward. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each C6 will help support the efforts of Make It Right.

USGBC strives to integrate the principles and practices of social and economic justice within those of sustainable building ? ensuring that low-income families will maintain access to decent, safe, and affordable housing, even as society?s standards for what is decent and safe continue to rise.

Green building offers opportunities to reduce energy and resource consumption, enabling lower utility costs and critical savings for owners, funding agencies and residents alike. Green developments are also designed to offer superior indoor air quality to protect residents? health and reduce health-care costs, and often provide better access to public transit and local amenities, decreasing the financial burden of transportation. The green home product database released with Home Depot will assist homeowners and green building professional to achieve these tenants of sustainability, health and affordability in their housing projects.

Nas Tells His Side Of Concert Promoter's Kidnapping

Rapper opens up about Angola incident for the first time on today's 'RapFix Live' at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com.

Musically, Nas has given so much of himself during the course of his 18-year rap career. But in the media, the Queensbridge MC is usually reserved and soft-spoken. Still, it was hard for God's Son to hold back when he was accused of skipping out on a New Year's show in Africa, which led an American concert promoter and his son to be kidnapped.

On today's (March 28) "RapFix Live," Nas finally gives his side of the story. "I didn't want to touch on it because it seemed like he was in grave danger out there," Nas said Tuesday during the interview, which will stream on MTV.com today at 4 p.m. ET.

The promoter returned home safely to New Jersey on February 19. TMZ broke the story January 3 and reported that Patrick Allocco and his son, whom he works with, were kidnapped by local Africa promoter Henrique "Riquhino" Miguel after Nas and an opening act failed to perform at a New Year's Eve concert in Angola.

Allocco's reps told TMZ that Nas and opening act Jemiah Jai were paid to perform two shows but failed to board their flights. Once Miguel realized that Nas wasn't going to perform, he sent his people to take Allocco and his son into custody at gunpoint. Nas eventually returned the $300,000 that was paid to him, and Allocco was released and allowed to return back to the U.S.

Now, Esco is ready to open up.

"Basically he was a promoter that I never worked with, and he wanted me to come to Africa for New Year's, which, for me, I thought, would be the best way to spend New Year's. ... The business wasn't handled. There was nothing sent to me, and there were no flights," he said. "By the time he did send money — he did eventually send money to me — but it was too late to go. I didn't even have a visa to get in the country. So that's canceled, the show's canceled."

Allocco, who is now contemplating litigation, has a differing account, contending that everything was in place for Nas to travel to Africa. "Nothing could be further from the truth," Allocco told MTV News of Nas' version of the story. "Nas put us in harm's way by not showing up and put my son and I at physical harm and at risk by his inaction to fly to Angola."

"That was just all wrong. Anytime I'm supposed to go to Africa, it happens," Nas said on "RapFix Live." "When people take care of business, it happens. ... You booked the flight but no return flight. I didn't have a visa, and you didn't send money till after I was supposed to jump on the plane to another country, and that's just the way it went down."

Catch Nas, Killer Mike, Bun B and Prodigy on a special episode of "RapFix Live" today at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, when all four esteemed lyricists will address the tragic shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin and more. Send your comments and thoughts on the unfortunate situation via Twitter using the hashtag #RapFixLive.

The ART of Book Promotion | Creative Flux

In the Digital Age, promotion is a daily part of most authors? lives, whether they like it or not. Considered by many as two separate processes, writing is seen as creative and purposeful; promotion, a drudgery. Well, what if authors started thinking about promotion as part of their creative lives? What would a writer?s life look like if creativity and promotion were blended? As someone who studies book promotion all day long, I can tell you that authors who incorporate promotion into their creative lives are having a lot more fun, becoming better writers, building longer-term relationships with their readers, and selling more books than those who keep these two responsibilities separate.

What exactly am I proposing here? I?m suggesting that when we put the ?art? back in book promotion, both authors and readers benefit. Let?s start by taking a look at a few examples of this ?blending? done well.

I became aware of Colin Falconer?through a tweet that said his blog was ?seriously addictive.? The link took me to ?Looking for Mr. Goodstory?an author?s search for James Clavell?s ghost, a good bourbon, and the perfect role for Russell Crowe.??Before even exploring his posts, I knew I liked this guy. Why? Because he was clever and having fun. The first post I read was about famous last words. It was oozing with creativity, historical knowledge and whimsy.

I explored the site more fully, and found posts about Falconer?s fear of flying, ?a phobia about the kind of people who end up sitting next to me on planes.??These were humorous, short character sketches with which anyone who?d ever flown could identify: The Ear Popper, The Talker, The Sweaty Virgin, and so on.

Though I am sure Falconer mentions his books sometimes, none of the posts I read did. He simply let his writing speak for itself. He drew readers in with his craft, and he appeared to be having a great time doing this. Subtly stationed nearby was a bio, which explained that he was the author of more than twenty historical novels. Also found on the sidelines were book covers, which linked readers to more information about his books. Though historical fiction is not a genre I typically read, I wanted to learn more so I bought a digital version of Falconer?s book Seraglio.

Roz Morris is another author who came on my radar as a result of social media. I had already purchased her latest book, when I saw her January 10 guest post for Creative Flux called ??The Black Dress.? Here, Morris shared a scene she?d cut reluctantly during final revisions of My Memories of a Future Life, a novel about an injured musician who must contemplate life without her passion.

Morris?explains about the scene,

?I like its simplicity, the tiny slice it showed of a musician?s life and the totemic responsibility Carol put into one garment?.Even though it didn?t make it to the page, I like to think that she still did it, off screen in the moments we didn?t see.?

Carol's DressThen, Morris commits another act of creativity and shares an elegant photograph she herself took of the dress, a family heirloom that inspired the scene. The response from readers revealed a high level of emotional engagement. Not only did they empathize with her struggle as a writer to cut a scene that she loved, but the story of the black dress took on a literary life of its own.

I especially identified with one reader?s comment.

?This is a touching scene. After having read this book, I do agree that it reiterates what Carol [the musician] is feeling?.It brings back all of those pangs that I felt for her?.Thanks for sharing this melancholy reminder of a great read!?

Do you think the next time Morris publishes a book, this reader will be there ready to devour it? Do you suppose Morris enjoyed creating the photo that breathed new life into a cherished but abandoned scene? I?m confident the answer to both questions is yes.

As a final example, I introduce the work of Harrison Solow, author of Felicity & Barbara Pym, a book I have now read twice. Like the other authors mentioned here, I discovered Solow?s work through social media. I dare you to tell me that you could resist clicking through tweets like these:

"The night before we left Malibu for Wales, a street I had never seen arose in a dream I didn?t know I was having." http://t.co/db4vg1M1 The theory that space could be warped was 1st proposed by Einstein in 1905 & demonstrated by Zephraim Cochrane in 2061. http://t.co/NeVbpi4G "So he would go up to his room...and think quietly about everything in the world except people." http://t.co/FMwRK5sH

Solow?s brilliant literary teasers make your neurons twitch until you click through and fall into a rich trove of stories, poems and reflections. Each tweet is an intimate invitation to explore the life and work of an artist. The more of her work you encounter, the more you want to read. And with each new post, her body of work as an artist grows. In this approach, writing and promotion are symbiotic?simply a writer sharing his or her unfolding body of work with the world. Herein, we discover the true ?art? of promotion. Instead of drudgery, book promotion becomes an encounter with creativity that is a joy for both reader and writer.

The Evolution of Anonymous

A worldwide network of hackers has managed to gain access to the most secure networks on the Internet. The leaderless and faceless group, known as Anonymous, has infiltrated networks of the CIA, Interpol, email accounts of presidents, and has taken down the major web properties of global corporations. During its near-eight years of existence, Anonymous hackers have exposed a huge network of neo-Nazis in Germany and a stealth online child pornography ring.

No one knows how wide the Anonymous hackers' network stretches across continents, nor how many people belong to the Internet-based group. All activity takes place on mostly secure networks and on social media. Anyone can carry the banner of Anonymous.

[More from Mashable: Your Profile Pic Has Nothing on These Guys [VIDEO]]

The rise of social media has proliferated the threat of attacks from people who claim to be a part of the elusive group. Though many times these highly publicized threats are not carried out, they nevertheless garner significant publicity.

Anonymous has claimed responsibility for data breaches, information leaks and website crashes. The group uses YouTube to upload voice-altered messages, Pastebin to upload documents about operations, the Tor Project to encrypt links -- making click paths untraceable -- and other online tools to protect identities.

Most missions are carried out in response to current events or in the fight for human rights. Anonymous often claims to be fighting for the defenseless. Whether Anonymous is an organization of vigilantes working for good, or simply cyber-criminals, that's up to you.

Origin: From Lulz to Political Action

Anonymous took form in 2003 on the online message board 4chan (think yesteryear's Reddit, which proliferates meme culture). The anonymity of the website spawned a group of pranksters, from which the politically geared Anonymous of today has evolved. Users on 4chan could post images and messages under the name "anonymous" or "moot" (nickname of 4chan's then 15-year-old founder Christopher Poole).

Cole Stryker, author of Epic Win for Anonymous: How 4Chan's Army Conquered the Web has been following the evolution of Anonymous since its inception. "I was interested in this whole culture of Anonymous that tracks down people and harasses them," Stryker told Mashable. "And from there, Anonymous as a political activist group evolving away from the little more trollish activities. They were attacking the Church of Scientology and starting to go after Sony and a couple of other huge companies."

The amorphous group shifted gears in 2007 with the plot against the Church of Scientology. Stryker calls this attack on what members perceived to be an "evil" organization as a rebranding for Anonymous. "Basically a group of Anons realized, 'Well, we have this ability to harness the power of thousands of strangers through the Internet to pull all those resources in making someone's life miserable. Why don't we take that power and use it for good?'"

Anonymous is still misunderstood, says Gabriella Coleman, an anthropologist studying hacker culture and digital activism. Though recent attacks have been politically influenced, it's not accurate to label Anonymous as a group with any sort of agenda.

Anonymous missions can have a direct action that may be "coy and playful, sometimes macabre and sinister, often all at once, Anonymous is still animated by a collective will toward mischief ? toward 'lulz,' a plural bastardization of the portmanteau LOL (laugh out loud)," Coleman states in an article published in Triple Canopy's Issue 15.

The one thing to take away about Anonymous is that it is extremely malleable. Stryker suggests thinking of Anonymous as a brand instead of a group. Anyone can claim to be Anonymous at any time.

"Anonymous means something different to everybody, that's a part of it. The guy who is protesting economic reform in Greece has very little in common with the guy who is terrorizing 11-year-old girls on YouTube in the U.S.," Stryker said, referring to the 4chan attack on Jessi Slaughter.

Becoming Infamous

Anonymous is a household name partly because of the extraordinary events that took place in 2011. Social revolutions occurred in Bahrain, Tunasia, Yemen and Egypt, proliferated by Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. The air of political uprising spread to the United States, where Anonymous members picked up on these causes.

Anonymous and other "hacktivist" groups were responsible for over 58% of all the world's comprised data last year, according Verizon's 2012 Data Breach Investigations Report. Activist groups account for stealing over 100 million records.

The researchers noticed that online hackers weren't just acting for bragging rights or out of boredom. Hacktivists were working for more fiery publicity. "The major shift that occurred in 2011 was that activist groups added data breaches to their repertoire with much-heightened intensity and publicity," the report states. "In other words, 2011 saw a merger between those classic misdeeds and a new 'oh by the way, we?re gonna steal all your data too' twist."

The annual report is conducted by Verizon, along with international police and security forces.

"The anti-Scientology protest was the first time they did it for political reasons," says Stryker. "Since then it has grown increasingly political, especially since they integrated with the Occupy Wall Street protests."

Anonymous has used the cartoon Guy Fawkes mask, worn by the main protagonist in 2005 movie V for Vendetta, as the main image for the movement. OWS has also adopted the icon in the pursuit of change.

Anonymous actively spread the word about the Occupy Wall Street movements, which took root in downtown Manhattan and spread to encampments of activists worldwide. "When Occupy Wall Street started, Anonymous spread the word online," says Stryker. "It drove more members to get involved. OWS was about physical protest, and Anonymous added an activist element in tandem."

Hacked: CIA website, in addition to several international law enforcement accounts Date of Incident: Feb. 3, 2012 What's Known: Anonymous made Feb. 3, 2012 the "day of action" of coordinated efforts to take down several government web properties. In the CIA.gov hack, personal data from Alabama court papers -- Social Security numbers, birthdays and addresses -- were exposed. Confidential emails from a Mexican mining agency were also released. The same day, hackers forced their way into a conference call between the FBI and Scotland Yard, the UK's Metropolitan Police Service. The 16-minute call was posted on YouTube with the headline "Hacked for the Lulz." Arrests: British teens Ryan Cleary and Jake Davis were arrested in connection with the hacked conference call. Bach To Rock Franchise

We base our method of music instruction on the knowledge that students learn best when they play the music they enjoy most. That?s why we use special arrangements of today?s music to help students become proficient instrumentalists or vocalists as well as seasoned performers. At B2R Music, individual music instruction is combined with band instruction that leads to regularly scheduled public performances, ?Battles of the Bands,? and recording sessions in our professional sound studio.

The real fun begins within just a few months of music instruction. By combining musical basics with rigorous performance standards, we enable students young and old to play together in bands, using a repertoire built upon the hit music of their generation.

As students develop their skills through music instruction, they can go any place their musical interests take them ? Rock, Pop, or Classical ? the works! Moreover, the experience of performing before audiences in bands from the beginning is an exciting component of music instruction ? building self-confidence, garnering peer recognition, and providing a strong social incentive for continued progress.

Benefits

What makes B2R a great franchising opportunity?

Breadth of revenue streams
At Bach to Rock, we teach everyone from three to ninety-three to play or sing the music they love, whether that?s rock or Bach. Our early childhood program develops the skills preschoolers need to read music, play simple rhythms and develop the fine motor control essential for future success in playing an instrument. Our senior program challenges active adults to share their love of music and enhance their own learning. And our individual, group and band programs cover everyone in between.

Our state-of-the-art recording studio encourages local bands (not just Bach to Rock bands) to share their sound with the world. Add to this birthday parties, corporate parties, and summer camp programs for a diverse revenue base. Not to mention sales of music books, guitar picks and strings, t-shirts, hats and other Bach to Rock merchandise.

We?re not one musical genre ? rock or classical. We?re not one age ? kids or adults. We are America?s Music School.

Increased need for private music instruction
With schools cutting music budgets at every turn, the need for private music instruction to fill the void is great. Combine this with Baby Boomers, the largest and wealthiest demographic in America, hitting retirement and taking up new hobbies and interests, and the demand will continue to grow.

It?s fun!
Bach to Rock is cool. We?re not selling burgers, yogurt, batteries or haircuts. We?re not open 24/7. Whether you prefer Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum or Lady and the Tramp, Bach to Rock can bring your passion to life. We do this for our students and we will do this for our franchisees!
