After a relaxing visit at Hong Kong bird market, I continued exploring the nearby neighborhood with the flower market which is located next to the bird and the fish / pet market.? It?s quite convenient to get here; you just walk out of the Prince Edward MTR station and follow the signage.
Hong Kong Flower Market (Yuen Po flower market)
Walking in a long strip full of florists is quite enjoyable. I get to see and smell different types of flowers. The shops here are a mix between retail and wholesale. Other than the bonsai, I was most impressed with orchids which look very exotic and pretty.
Hong Kong Fish / Pet Market
The main attraction in this market is fish of course. They are placed in small bags ready to be sold while the more lucky ones are placed in fish tanks. There is quite an extensive range of fish on sale from the clown fish (Nemo) to prawns. Yes, people here keep small prawns and crabs as a pet :). I found out that water plants are as popular as the fish, this being a common interest for Hong Kong people who keep water plants (without the fish) in a fish tank. I was told, it?s easier to maintain when the family are away on holiday. Make sense indeed.
Another interesting scene I found while exploring the Fish / Pet Market is the amount of dogs for sale. I was told Hong Kong people do not like mixed breed dogs and will only own or purchase pure breed dogs. Looking at the amount of dogs for sale, I came to the conclusion that there is a big demand.
Having said that, I had to wonder where on earth the dogs will get their exercise because everywhere I look, there is no free land. There are parks but most of them do not allow dogs and most of the small dogs I saw were being carried by their owners. I wonder whether dogs in Hong Kong get a chance to use their feet sufficiently. At the end I cannot bear seeing big dogs in small cages. I saw Labradors and Border Collie puppies in the same sized cages as Chihuahuas. The fish / pet market is worth a visit but less so if you are a true dog lover and likely to feel sorry for the pets housed here.
