Texas Job Fair News: Resume And Cover Letter Guidelines Which ...

By Jim Davis

When you are looking for a new job opportunity the first thing that a prospective employer sees is your resume and cover letter. Given the volume of applicants in today's competitive job market your resume and cover letter can be scanned over in as little as thirty seconds so you need to make an impact. Here are some resume and cover letter tips to help you be more successful in your chosen career.

Firstly the layout is important. Your resume should be no more than two sides and there should be sufficient white space on the page so that the type is clear. You should avoid using any quirky fonts and colors and make sure that if you are posting out the resume the paper is white. Colored paper looks unprofessional. If you are sending it by email you should make sure that the electronic format is compatible with other systems.

A clear organized heading is the best way to start out your resume. You must have your contact information which should include your name, address, email, phone number, and any other valid data. This should appear at the beginning of the page. Most of your work history should start with the most recent. It should be in chronological sequence. If you have not work for a specific time period and it create a gap you need to have a reason for this. Bullet points are another way that you can set up and keep your data organised.

List your education and any relevant voluntary work that you may have done that is relevant to the job. There is no point in talking in great depth about a fashion retail position you did ten years ago if the position you are applying for is as an accountant. You need to keep it concise and keep it relevant.

If you want to include your interests on the page it is okay. However, do not go overboard. You are applying for a job and they are not interested in your latest travels and adventures as a hobby unless it is related to the position. Keep all interests as a relevant point which will heighten their interest and provide you as a viable candidate.

The cover letter should take the key duties that the job requires and show how you can meet those needs. You should begin by introducing yourself and explaining how your skills match the requirements. It is also very appealing to employers if you say something about the company. After all you want to work there and they will want to know that you have done your research about the business and you have an interest in it.

When you are writing the cover letter make sure that it is not too wordy. Most employers do not have the time to read everything. You want to keep it short, sweet, and to the point. You do want to include everything about yourself, as well as the skills you have as a potential employee. But you will be able to expand on this further during an interview. Your cover letter is the focal point at which he or she will ultimately decide to set you up for an interview.

Make sure to following these guidelines when creating your resume and cover letter. It will make you appear professional to potential employers. The first step is getting an interview, so it should stand out from other candidates. It you follow these rules you will get noticed.
