Nearly 1 in 4 BlackBerry users also think their smartphone runs at 4G speeds
According to a new survey from gadget shopping site Retrevo, some smartphone owners are a bit confused as to what their shiny handsets are capable of. When asked if they plan on picking up a 4G-equipped smartphone this year, 34% of iPhone owners and 24% of BlackBerry devotees boasted that they already had one. This is, of course, impossible, as both Apple and RIM are yet to release a 4G device.
The startling number of misguided consumers highlights the confusion over not only the difference between 3G and 4G, but possibly also Apple's decision to go with the name "iPhone 4." As the iPhone 3G and 3GS were graced with names referring to their network speed, you couldn't be blamed for thinking that the iPhone 4 boosted things up to the next level, but unfortunately that just isn't the case.
Apple's next iPhone ? which is rumored to be well into production and headed for a September release ? may very well sport 4G network speeds, but this stat is yet to be confirmed. BlackBerry, on the other hand, has its Bold 9900 4G handset waiting in the wings for a release later this year, though with the less-than-warm reception that greeted the company's PlayBook tablet, it's tough to say whether a smartphone speed boost will be able to right the ship.
