In this 2010 photo, cease-and-desist orders hang, taped to a door at 126 E. (AP) ? Authorities say two out-of-state doctors who traveled to Maryland to perform late-term abortions have been arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder, an unusual use of a law that allows for murder charges in the death of a viable fetus.

Dr. Steven Brigham, of Voorhees, N.J., was taken into custody Wednesday night and is being held in the Camden County jail, according to police in Elkton, Md. Authorities also arrested Dr. Nicola Riley in Salt Lake City and she is in jail in Utah. Each is awaiting an extradition hearing.

A grand jury indicted the two doctors after a 16-month investigation, police said.

The investigation began in August 2010 after what authorities say was a botched procedure at Brigham's clinic in Elkton, located near the border of Maryland and Delaware.

An 18-year-old woman who was 21 weeks pregnant suffered a ruptured uterus and an injured bowel, according to documents filed in a previous investigation by medical regulators. Rather than call 911, Riley drove her to a nearby hospital, where both she and Brigham were uncooperative and Brigham refused to give his name, documents show.

A search of the clinic after the botched abortion revealed a freezer containing 35 late-term fetuses, including one believed to have been aborted at 36 weeks, the documents show.

Brigham, 55, is charged with five counts of first-degree murder, five counts of second-degree murder and one count of conspiracy. Riley, 46, faces one count each of first- and second-degree murder and one conspiracy count.

The charges relate to the botched procedure as well as other abortions performed at the Elkton clinic or fetuses found there, authorities said.

Cecil County State's Attorney Ellis Roberts declined to elaborate on the charges or the circumstances that led to them, saying it would be inappropriate to comment before Brigham and Riley, who were taken into custody on fugitive warrants, had seen the indictments.

Maryland is one of 38 states that allows murder charges to be brought against someone accused of killing a viable fetus. The 2005 state law has so far only been used for cases in which defendants were accused of assaulting or killing pregnant women.

"We are in uncharted territory," Roberts said. "At some point in time," he added, "you will hear our explanation" of the charges.

The state law allows for murder or manslaughter charges to be brought against a person who intends to kill or seriously injure a fetus or who wantonly disregards the safety of a fetus. It does not apply to doctors administering lawful medical care and does not impinge on a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy.

Brigham's attorney, C. Thomas Brown, said in an emailed statement that he does not believe his client has violated any Maryland laws. He said he has not seen any charging documents or spoken with Brigham since the arrest.

"Dr. Brigham has fully cooperated with this investigation," Brown said. "I had an agreement with the state's attorney's office that if Dr. Brigham was charged, he would voluntarily come to Maryland to surrender. For reasons unknown to me, the state did not honor that agreement. ... It is my opinion that Dr. Brigham's arrest in New Jersey was orchestrated to ensure that he remained in custody over this holiday weekend."

An attorney for Riley also took issue with her client being behind bars.

"We believe the charges are without legal merit," said attorney Sharon Krevor-Weisbaum. "We believe it's inappropriate for her to be held without bond. She is not a flight risk and she should be released on her own recognizance."

Krevor-Weisbaum said Riley's legal team would comment further after they had seen the indictment.

A spokeswoman for the Center for Reproductive Rights, a legal advocacy group, said she was not aware of any cases in the United States in which an abortion provider had been charged with murder in the death of a fetus. A Philadelphia doctor, Kermit Gosnell, faces murder charges in the deaths of seven newborn babies but has not been charged with killing fetuses.

The botched 2010 abortion led regulators to order Brigham to stop practicing medicine in Maryland without a license, and Riley's Maryland license was suspended. Brigham's New Jersey license was also suspended, leaving him without a valid license in any state, and New Jersey authorities are pursuing revocation of his license there. New Jersey authorities have cooperated with the Maryland criminal probe, said Thomas R. Calcagni, director of the State Division of Consumer Affairs.

According to regulators, Brigham would begin abortions in New Jersey and have his patients drive themselves to Maryland to complete the procedures, taking advantage of Maryland's more permissive laws. Brigham was not authorized to perform abortions in New Jersey after the first trimester, and regulators called his actions manipulative and deceptive.

In Maryland, licensed physicians can perform abortions before the fetus is deemed capable of surviving outside the womb, and abortions of viable fetuses are permitted to protect the life or health of the mother or if the fetus has serious genetic abnormalities. Doctors generally consider fetuses to be viable starting around 23 weeks.

Anti-abortion activists hailed the arrests of Brigham and Riley.

"These two individuals are now where they belong and should be in jail for the rest of their lives," the Rev. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, said in a statement. "Even those who believe abortion should be legal can join with us to stop the out-of-control practices of people like Brigham and Riley."

AUTOMOTIVE - VINTAGE: Mercedes' Conquering 1914 Racer

One of the highlights of the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August was the Mercedes, Benz and Mercedes-Benz feature that marked the 125th anniversary of the motor car. Among the historic collection was this Mercedes 18/100 Grand Prix that had been meticulously prepared for the 1914 French Grand Prix.

Equipped with a sophisticated four-valve head and boasting a relatively small displacement, the Mercedes' four-cylinder engine was the first that could rev over 3,000 rpm. No fewer than five were entered in the prestigious race where it faced rivals from Italy, France and Great Britain in a rather more peaceful encounter than the looming war.

This race car headed the 1-2-3 victory for Mercedes at the grand prix that was run just before the First World War. (Photo: Wouter Melissen) Christian Lautenschlager headed a 1-2-3 Mercedes victory in this very example. One of the sister cars was later sold to the United States and driven to Mercedes' only Indy 500 win by Ralph DePalma. The design was so sophisticated that in modified form, the surviving cars were raced well into the 1920s. Our feature car is one of three survivors and has been meticulously restored to its French Grand Prix winning configuration.

Mercedes had suspended the company's competition program following the victory in the 1908 French Grand Prix, with the Paul Daimler-led engineering team instead focused on the development of aero engines. During this period, valuable lessons were learned about lightweight materials and construction. These were applied when the German manufacturer decided to ready new cars for the 1914 French Grand Prix at Lyon.

Leaving little to chance, Mercedes built several experimental six-cylinder cars for the 1913 Grand Prix de la Sarthe. Considering the new-for-1914 displacement limit of 4.5 liters and maximum weight of 1,100 kg (2,420 pounds), Mercedes figured a four-cylinder engine would suffice.

During Mercedes' absence from racing, Peugeot had come to the fore with hugely sophisticated twin-cam, four-valve-per-cylinder engines. These cutting-edge machines had taken victories in the 1912 and 1913 French Grands Prix and were certainly the cars to beat in 1914.

The advanced four-cylinder designed by Mercedes engineers was able to rev over 3,000 rpm, the highest to date for the company's racing engines. (Photo: Wouter Melissen) Using aero-engine technology, a new straight four was developed built on an aluminum crankcase with separate steel cylinders. Welded on the cylinders, the individual heads sported four valves. Mercedes, keen to do things their own way, used just a single overhead camshaft to actuate the valves. The camshaft was driven from the crankshaft by a shaft that was fitted at the rear of the engine. The crankshaft itself was counterbalanced and forged in the highest-grade Austrian steel.

Designed to run at twice the speed of any Mercedes engine that had come before, lubrication of the new four was vital. An intricate system was fitted that combined a wet sump with a high-pressure pump. No piston rings were fitted, so by the design, the engine used oil. Additional oil could be fed into the system by a manual pump to be operated by the riding mechanic. To prevent the plugs from fouling, as many as four plugs could be fitted, although the cars raced with three. These were powered by two separate magnetos to ensure reliability.

The ?M 93654? engine was fed by a single Mercedes up-draft carburetor. The first competition engine to rev over 3,000 rpm, the four produced its peak power of 106 horsepower at 3,100 rpm. This was quite an achievement considering no other Mercedes/Daimler engine built up to that point could safely rev over 1,500 rpm. A separately mounted four-speed gearbox was used. This was connected to the rear wheels not through the chains previously used but by a drive shaft to save weight.

The chassis of the new Grand Prix racer followed convention with a cross-braced, pressed-steel frame suspended by semi-elliptic leaf springs and solid axles. One of the things carried over from the 1913 experimental cars was the V-shaped radiator and tightly wrapped aluminum body complete with belly pan. To reduce drag even further, even the front axles were streamlined. Unlike most of the rivals, the Mercedes 18/100 featured brakes only on the rear axle and an additional transmission brake.

    Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4020

The Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4020 ($149.99 direct) is one of a small but growing group of inkjets challenging the conventional wisdom about the relative merits of inkjets and lasers. Quite simply, it scores better than some lasers at both speed and cost per page, precisely the things that lasers are supposed to be best at. That, plus the low price compared to color lasers, plus features like the built-in duplexer for printing on both sides of a page, wired and WiFi network support, and more, makes it a potentially better choice than a laser for a reasonably large percentage of micro and small offices. It also makes the WP-4020 an Editors' Choice.

In some ways, the WP-4020 is the next step up from the Epson WorkForce 60 ($129.99 direct, 4 stars), another Editors' Choice that's also aimed at business use. In addition to being a bit more expensive than the WorkForce 60, however, the WP-4020 offers faster speed; better paper handling, with both a 250 sheet tray and 80 sheet tray; and a lower cost per page. The difference adds up to making the WP-4020 more appropriate than the WorkForce 60 for heavier-duty printing.

One other feature worth mention is support for Epson Connect Email Print. If the printer is directly attached to a network, using either a wired or WiFi connection, you can register it on Epson's Web site and get an email address assigned to it. You can then print a document and email cover letter from any device with an email program, and from anywhere you happen to be, by sending an email to the printer with the document attached.

Epson says the printer also supports printing through the cloud with Google Cloud Print and printing from iOS devices over a WiFi connection with Apple AirPrint. The printer doesn't come with setup instructions for either option, but you can find them on Epson's Web site.

    Setup and Speed
Setting the WP-4020 up is mostly standard fare, but it's worth mention that the printer is large for an inkjet. If you caught just a quick glimpse of it, you could easily mistake it for a large personal laser, thanks to the box-like shape and a size that verges on being too big to comfortably share a desk with, at 11.2 by 18.1 by 16.5 inches (HWD). The only thing that gives it away as an inkjet is the placement of the output tray. It's just above the input tray, near the bottom front, instead of being on top where you'd find it on a laser.

    Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4020

I connected the WP-4020 to a wired network for my tests and printed from a Windows Vista system. The speed was more than impressive. On our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) it came in at an effective 5.6 pages per minute (ppm). As one point of reference, the WorkForce 60 seemed impressively fast at 4.1 ppm. More significant, the WP-4020 was also faster than comparable color laser-class printers, including, for example, the Editors' Choice Dell 1250c Color LED Printer ($229.99 direct, 4 stars). Photo speed was also acceptably fast, averaging 1 minute 12 seconds for a 4 by 6.

    Output Quality
The printer's output quality is less impressive than its speed, but the text and graphics are easily good enough for most business purposes, and the photos are much higher quality than most businesses need.

In addition to offering reasonably high quality, the text on plain paper is far more water resistant than you'd expect for inkjet output on plain paper. In my tests it withstood water as well as laser output. Graphics output was just a touch lower quality than most inkjet printers, primarily because of some banding in the default mode. Even so, it's easily good enough for any internal business need. And as with text, graphics on plain paper was as water resistant as laser output in my tests.

Photo output qualified as true photo quality, which is much better than most businesses need, but a nice extra for those that do, such as real estate offices. Similarly, if your print needs at a home office are heavy duty enough to justify getting the WP-4020, the photo quality will let you use it in the dual role of home and home office printer.

One last important feature is the low cost per page I've already mentioned. Epson doesn't make any cost per page claims, but if you look up the prices for the cartridges and the claimed yields, the running cost works out to 1.6 cents for a monochrome page and 7.7 cents for a color page. That's not only a lot lower than most inkjets, it's lower than most low-cost lasers offer. In short, not only can the WP-4020 save money on the initial price compared with buying a comparable laser, it costs less to run too.

There's no question that the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4020 has a lot going for it: fast speed, good paper handling, low initial cost, low running cost, and output quality that's easily good enough for most business use. What most stands out about it, however, is that it can give you most of the benefits of a personal color laser with the initial price of a personal mono laser, and a lower running cost than either. If you're considering a laser for your small office, don't buy one until you take a close look at the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4020 as well

    Ranger banned in Venezuela

Texas Rangers catcher Yorvit Torrealba was suspended from Venezuela's professional baseball league for 66 games for striking an umpire.

Torrealba was arguing with the home-plate umpire Friday after striking out. He angrily put a hand on the umpire's mask and shoved him. He was then ejected.

League president Jose Grasso Vecchio called Torrealba's behavior unacceptable and a violation of league rules.

Torrealba plays for the Caracas Lions when not playing in the majors. His agent, Melvin Roman, said Torrealba acknowledges he got carried away in the heat of the moment.

The Chicago Cubs agreed to one-year contracts with right-handers Andy Sonnanstine and Manny Corpas. Sonnanstine, who turns 29 in March, was 28-31 with a 5.26 ERA in five seasons with Tampa Bay. He made 80 starts in 132 appearances. Corpas, 29, spent five seasons with Colorado but did not pitch in the majors last year after having Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow in September 2010.

    Soccer

U.S. star Clint Dempsey's goal for Fulham sent Chelsea to a third consecutive 1-1 draw in London and further damaged its Premier League title hopes. Reeling from its worst home loss in more than 40 years, Fulham scored just its fifth away goal this season. Bryan Ruiz eluded Chelsea's Ashley Cole and crossed to Dempsey, who sent the ball past goalkeeper Petr Cech in the 57th minute. It was Dempsey's ninth goal of the season. Chelsea is two points ahead of Arsenal and 11 points behind the leaders -- Manchester rivals City and United.

The Spanish boat Telefonica won the first stage of the second leg of the eight-month Volvo Ocean Race. It beat Camper by less than two minutes after a trek that lasted 15 days. Telefonica trailed Camper much of the past two days but overtook its rival about 8 miles before the finish in an undisclosed port in the Indian Ocean. The leg started in Cape Town, South Africa, but organizers have kept the locations of the boats a secret for the final part of the first stage to avoid pirates off the coast of Somalia. Telefonica earned 24 points and extended its overall lead over Camper by seven points. The 45,000-mile race ends in July in Ireland.

    Horse racing

Kauto Star won the King George VI Chase for an unprecedented fifth time, beating last year's winner Long Run, in Kempton, England. Ridden by jockey Ruby Walsh, the 11-year-old Kauto Star finished 11/4 lengths ahead of 6-year-old Long Run in the 3-mile steeplechase. With the win, Kauto Star moved ahead of Desert Orchid's four victories in the prestigious race. In last year's Chase, Long Run easily defeated Kauto Star and went on to take the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Greek abbot jailed over land swap scandal (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? Greek authorities on Wednesday jailed the abbot of a 1,000-year-old Greek Orthodox monastery pending trial for his alleged key role in a land swap with the state that blew up into a major political scandal.

Investigators have said the deal was weighted in favor of Vatopedi Monastery in northern Greece and cost taxpayers about euro100 million ($131 million). Two ministers lost their jobs over the swap, which the conservative government canceled, but legal issues have delayed the full restitution.

The scandal nonetheless contributed significantly to the conservatives' 2009 general election defeat.

Abbot Efraim, 55, was led to Athens' Korydallos prison after spending the night in the capital's police headquarters, following a 600-kilometer (370-mile) journey from the Orthodox monastic sanctuary of Mount Athos ? from which women and female animals have been banned since 1046.

A few dozen supporters shouted slogans outside the prison.

Efraim had been kept under guard in his monastery cell since Saturday, having been temporarily judged unfit to travel due to a high fever and a high blood sugar count. He will stand trial on charges of embezzlement, money laundering and making a false statement.

Fellow Christian Orthodox Russia waded into the fray on Wednesday, with the country's Foreign Ministry criticizing the decision to jail Efraim.

"Bearing in mind the statement by Abbot Efraim of his willingness to cooperate with investigative organs and the condition of his health, we are deeply concerned by the decision of the Greek judicial organs to keep him in custody pending trial, which doesn't take into account the rulings and recommendations of the European Court of Human Rights," ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement.

The abbot had escorted a Christian relic from the monastery's collection to Russia in October, which millions of faithful in 15 Russian cities lined up to view. In Moscow, the queue to see the belt purportedly worn by the Virgin Mary stretched for 2.5 miles (4 kilometers), and the wait was as long as 24 hours.

Greece's Foreign Ministry rejected the criticism.

"Greece is a country ruled by the law that has a long democratic tradition and respect for human rights, where there is full respect for the independence of justice and a clear separation of powers," ministry spokesman Grigoris Delavekouras said. "On these issues, Greece accepts no indications on how to act."

On Tuesday night, several hundred monks, nuns and other demonstrators gathered outside a central court building to protest Efraim's arrest.

No trial date has been set, and the abbot's lawyers are expected to apply for his release. Under Greek law, suspects can be jailed for up to 18 months pending trial.

Greek politicians embroiled in the scandal will not stand trial, as parliament ruled this year that the statute of limitations ? which is far more restrictive for members of parliament than for other citizens ? had expired.

Vatopedi Monastery is a treasure hove of mediaeval artifacts and books. It has attracted large numbers of male guests, including Britain's Prince Charles, who is a frequent visitor to Mount Athos.

Microsoft Security Essentials is still the best darn antivirus we've used; it's free, and it's just as effective as anything you'd pay for. Head over to Microsoft's site, download the suite, and set it to auto-scan and auto-update so you can stop fussing with it and get on to the fun stuff.
    • Offload Your Computer's Bloat?Unless you built your computer yourself, it's likely the manufacturer's stuck some unsightly, unnecessary, bloated crapware on your computer that will do nothing but slow your computer down from the start. To get rid of it, download previously mentioned Revo Uninstaller and uninstall the software that shipped with your machine.
    • Change Up Your Theme?Okay, so it's not entirely necessary to do this before anything else, but why stare at that bland Windows wallpaper when you could be watching a slideshow of different Ferraris as you set up the rest of your computer? Microsoft's got some great themes over at its site, and there are quite a few others floating around the net as well. Grab some of our favorite wallpapers from our Wallpaper Wednesday series, and if you want to take it even further, check out our guide to fully customizing your desktop and setting up an attractive, customized desktop HUD with Rainmeter. Once you've got your desktop looking awesome, it's time to get to know Windows 7.

    Install Some Killer Programs

    • Windows Maintenance Tips: The Good, Bad, and Useless? Now that you've got your system up and running, the last step is to make sure you keep it up and running (and running fast). We rounded up all the most popular Windows maintenance tips and showed you which ones really help (and hurt) your machine. For more Windows maintenance tips, you can check out our Ask Lifehacker on the subject, too.
    • Dual Boot Windows 7 and Windows 8 Side By Side?We got our first peek at Microsoft's upcoming version of Windows this year, and it looks awesome?not to mention fast. We later took an in-depth look at the OS, from the Metro UI (which isn't great without touch, but it doesn't matter) to the desktop to the new Windows Explorer and the improved task manager. If you really want to dig deep, check out its lesser-known features while you're at it. It isn't quite ready to be your primary operating system, but if you're curious, it's worth checking out. If you don't want to dual boot, you can always install it in a virtual machine, too.

We hope these tips have helped you get your computer up, running, and customized just the way you like it. If you're already a Windows veteran and you've got some tips that we haven't mentioned, be sure to share them with us in the comments.

H.S. SPORTS: Area teams to host holiday tournaments

Some high school teams consider the time from several days before Christmas to a couple of days after New Year's Day to be a break.

But most consider that a break only from league games and every day practices.

Because in reality, the majority of area sports teams are in action during this hoilday time, and most travel out of the area to participate in those events.

There are four events scheduled to be hosted by area teams -- the Hound Invitational Tournament (HIT) at Shippensburg and the Fannett-Metal Christmas Tournament for boys basketball, the Teddy Thanos Lions Club Tournament for girls hoops and the Dale Bock Memorial Holiday Tournament at Chambersburg for wrestling (see Tuesday's paper for preview).

The F-M Christmas and HIT have had long lives -- this year is the 39th edition at Fannett-Metal and it's the 38th for Shippensburg.

However, the F-M event will have a different look because Forbes Road decided not to participate this year for the first time in quite a while. Shalom Christian has taken the Cardinals' spot.

The HIT was only a three-team event last year, but picked up Exeter to go with Camp Hill and Palmyra.

The Lions Club tourney at Forbes Road has the same four teams as last year -- the host Cardinals, Fannett-Metal, Hyndman and the Frederick (Md.) Force.

Chambersburg's boys did not play in a holiday tournament a year ago, but have been invited to the Red Lion Tournament. The Trojans are paired against Penn Manor in the

first round, while the host Lions take on Bradford, which is making the trip from the northernmost part of the state.

The Trojan girls were originally scheduled to play in a tournament at Susquehanna Township, but that event was scrapped. So Chambersburg will host Palmyra on Wednesday and play at Warwick on Thursday.

Southern Fulton's boys get the holiday schedule kicked off tonight, playing Hancock at the Tri-State Shootout in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Other boys teams in action this week include Greencastle-Antrim (Doub Tourney in Williamsport, Md.), James Buchanan (Big Spring Holiday) and Cumberland Valley Christian (Valley Forge Christian).

Shippensburg's girls (Lower Dauphin Winter Classic), James Buchanan's girls (Big Spring Holiday) and Southern Fulton's girls (Hancock, Md. Holiday) are also competing this week.

Greencastle (Francis Scott Key) and Waynesboro (Conestoga Valley) are involved in individual style wrestling events this week, while Chambersburg, JB and Ship will all compete at Big Spring's Bulldog Bash swimming meet.

iMAME app gets pulled from iTunes app store

In barely enough time to get out of the app store and into the hearts of retro gamers everywhere, the iMAME emulator on iOS has already been erased from iTunes -- just days since its release. Alas, that lack of any official endorsement may have reared its ugly head. Well, it was good while it lasted. Guess we'll carry on saving up for that Vita purchase...

    [Thanks Zac]

Dollar rises after mixed US economic reports (AP)

NEW YORK ? The dollar rose against other major currencies after the U.S. government released a pair of mixed economic reports.

Currency trading is thin Friday ahead of Christmas. U.S. financial markets will be closed Monday in observance of the holiday, which falls on Sunday.

The euro fell to $1.3040 in late trading Friday from $1.3043 late Thursday. The British pound fell to $1.5605 from $1.5678. The dollar rose to 0.9371 Swiss franc from 0.9364.

The Commerce Department said Friday that orders to U.S. factories for durable goods rose 3.8 percent in November, the biggest gain since July.

In a separate report, the Commerce Department said that consumer spending rose 0.1 percent and incomes also rose 0.1 percent. Both gains were below what economists were expecting.

In other trading Friday, the dollar fell to 78.02 Japanese yen from 78.17 Japanese yen and to 1.0206 Canadian dollar from 1.0212 Canadian dollar.

Pope laments Christmas consumerism, glitter (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI decried the increasing commercialization of Christmas as he celebrated Christmas Eve Mass on Saturday night, urging the faithful to look beyond the holiday's "superficial glitter" to discover its true meaning.

Benedict presided over the service in a packed St. Peter's Basilica, kicking off an intense two weeks of Christmas-related public appearances that will test the 84-year-old pontiff's stamina amid signs that fatigue is starting to slow him down.

The Christmas Eve Mass was moved up to 10 p.m. from midnight several years ago to spare the pope a late night that is followed by an important Christmas Day speech. In a new concession this year, Benedict processed down the basilica's central aisle on a moving platform to spare him the long walk.

Benedict appeared tired by the end of the Mass and a dry cough interrupted his homily.

In his homily, Benedict lamented that Christmas has become an increasingly commercial celebration that obscures the simplicity of the message of Christ's birth.

"Let us ask the Lord to help us see through the superficial glitter of this season, and to discover behind it the child in the stable in Bethlehem, so as to find true joy and true light," he said.

It was the second time in as many days that Benedict has pointed to the need to rediscover faith to confront the problems facing the world today. In his end-of-year meeting with Vatican officials on Thursday, Benedict said Europe's financial crisis was largely "based on the ethical crisis looming over the Old Continent."

Benedict officially kicked off Christmas a few hours before the evening Mass, lighting a candle in his studio window overlooking St. Peter's Square in a sign of peace, as crowds gathered to witness the unveiling of the Vatican's larger-than-life sized nativity scene.

Security was tight for the evening Mass, as it has been in recent years. There were no repeats of the 2008 and 2009 Christmas Eve security breaches, in which a woman with a history of psychiatric problems and wearing a telltale red sweat shirt jumped the wooden security barrier along the basilica's central aisle and lunged for the pope.

In 2008, the pope's security detail blocked her from getting to Benedict. But in 2009, she managed to grab Benedict's vestments and pulled him to the ground. The pope was unhurt and continued along with the service, but a French cardinal who was nearby fell and broke his hip.

On Sunday, Benedict will deliver his traditional "Urbi et Orbi" speech, Latin for "to the city and the world," from the central loggia of St. Peter's overlooking the piazza. Usually, the speech is a survey of sorts of the hardships and wars confronting humanity. He's also due to deliver Christmas greetings in dozens of languages.

Next weekend, he'll preside over a New Year's Eve vespers service, followed by a New Year's Day Mass. A few days later he'll celebrate Epiphany Mass followed by his traditional baptizing of babies in the Vatican's frescoed Sistine Chapel.

2011 Supercut: The Year In Gaming

X-Play put together a supercut comprised of ?the most outstanding moments of nearly 100 games from 2011.? Which is odd since I don?t see any of my Sims dying in a fire or any talking toilets BASE jumping or any adventurers taking an arrow to the knee (yes, same joke again).

The video is below, along with a full list of all 96 games used. Whoa, there were a lot of games with a major label release last year. Someone could use that list as part of a New Year?s resolution to play every game, eschewing all economic and familial responsibilities while growing ever more apathetic and unhygienic. Upon completion of the list, an achievement unlocks and they?re ready to become a blogger.

Alvin McEwen: Chuck Norris: The 'Action Hero' Who Won't Stand Up to Real Injustice

Chuck Norris is an action movie star -- and a bad one. But he should stay that way. His forays into politics reveal his basic ignorance.

He has penned a piece for the American Family Association whining about how the Obama administration has declared war on religion. Personally I don't think he wrote it; I think someone else wrote it and he attached his name to it, because it reads like the usual religious right hogwash.

But two items on his list of grievances caught my eye:

Here is why the two items caught my eye. The first item is a basic lie. And that can be easily be proven by the link contained in the item. The Washington Post article that it links to clearly says:

The Pentagon will permit military chaplains to perform same-sex marriage as long as such ceremonies are not prohibited in the states where they reside, it said Friday.

Defense Department guidance issued to military chaplains said they may participate in ceremonies on or off military bases in states that recognize gay unions. Chaplains are not required to officiate at same-sex weddings if doing so is counter to their religious or personal beliefs, the guidance said.

The second claim I illuminated because Secretary Clinton was not demonizing religious beliefs. She was calling attention to the fact that in some foreign countries, LGBTQ people are persecuted by way of beatings, vicious murders, forced rapes, and forced reparative therapy:

Today, I want to talk about the work we have left to do to protect one group of people whose human rights are still denied in too many parts of the world today. In many ways, they are an invisible minority. They are arrested, beaten, terrorized, even executed. Many are treated with contempt and violence by their fellow citizens while authorities empowered to protect them look the other way or, too often, even join in the abuse. They are denied opportunities to work and learn, driven from their homes and countries, and forced to suppress or deny who they are to protect themselves from harm.

Chuck Norris considers himself an action hero. He has starred in many motion pictures and a television show (Walker, Texas Ranger), portraying himself as someone who fights against injustice. As such, Norris has been shown fictionally preventing innocent people from being beaten, killed, or generally terrorized.

How is it that this man, who has made a career out of being a hero to the persecuted in motion pictures and television, can conveniently ignore actual cases of people being persecuted simply because these people are gay?

The answer is clear. His persona is nothing more than phony, macho bravado.

Chuck Norris can't stand up to injustice because he simply doesn't know what real injustice is. The only type of injustice he knows belongs on a sound stage. It begins when the director says "action" and ends when the same director yells "cut." Somehow, because of all of the years in this phony world, Norris sees himself as an actual heroic figure.

A little advice, Chuck. Stay in the land of make believe. In real life, you just don't measure up to your image.

    Hat tip to Goodasyou.org

DIY solar panels head to Africa

Mark Kragh explains how to make a solar-powered mobile phone charger

In a north London suburban street there is an unassuming wooden door which leads into a garage-cum-workshop which at first glance is remarkable only for a drum kit at one end.

A second glance reveals a bunch of solar panels stacked against the wall and a man, busy breaking them up and reassembling them in a very home-made fashion.

The end result is DIY solar kits that can recharge phones and batteries. They look makeshift but they have the potential to make a huge difference to people thousands of miles away in Kenya.

As the director of KnowYourPlanet, Mark Kragh's day job is to resell solar panels to small businesses and hobbyists.

But in February he will travel to Kenya to distribute specially-made kits he is giving away as charity, and to show local people how to make more.

    Solar scrap

For many in Africa there is little access to electricity due to mains power shortages. Infrastructure has not kept pace with the explosion in mobile phone ownership so it is not unusual for people to walk for several hours just to charge their phones.

"Often, charge points are driven by petrol or diesel generators, which are dangerous to operate and of course emit carbon dioxide and other pollutants. A daily phone charge can cost a considerable amount relative to people's wages," said Mr Kragh.

He was inspired by a chance conversation with a friend to experiment with using solar power as an alternative method to charging phones and batteries.

"The project started a few years back when my friend in Senegal asked me if I had any cheap options for solar power for Africa. I told him that PV [photovoltaics] was way too expensive and not a viable option, it required batteries and many other components and he should just forget about it.

"I kept thinking about this, could this really be true? Why could we not use a renewable energy? So I did some research and realised there was an entire community of people who already make solar panels from scrap," he said.

He was also inspired by his grandmother Dr Elisabeth Svendsen, a lifelong charity worker who founded the UK's Donkey Sanctuary.

"She passed away this year but my granny travelled in Africa for 40 years, hands-on with all the good and bad that brought with it. She made a huge impact on the local people's lives and I hope that I will be able to carry on this work in my own way," he said.

    Locally sourced

The kits he creates are made from solar panels that manufacturers have rejected.

"There are very strict rules," said Mr Kragh.

Slight chips in the corner render the panels useless for traditional solar energy use but perfect for the DIY kits Mr Kragh has designed.

He aims to make them deliberately makeshift, creating a fairly crude circuit of solar panels on plywood.

The panels also require some more sophisticated kit.

"Initially we will bring specialised materials with us such as voltage regulators, UV stable encapsulants, solar cells and PV ribbon," said Mr Kragh.

But over time he hopes to be able to source components locally.

"To start with that would be glass, LEDs, batteries, wood and metal, wires and connectors. A great part of the pilot is simply testing and trying lots of non-solar materials to see what works," he said.

"Our main concern is the intense sun which causes degradation due to the high levels of heat and UV rays," he added.

Armed with a ?5,000 grant from charity World in Need, Mr Kragh aims to build at least 1,000 kits when he arrives, training local people along the way so that they can build new ones and service old ones.

The ultimate goal is to create a $1 (64p) solar charger which has at least a five year lifespan.

"We aim to train local people in these techniques to create cottage industries, giving people locally the opportunity to generate income and keep currency in the community, rather than pay European and Chinese manufacturers and distribution chains and retail networks," said Mr Kragh.

And, in case you were wondering about the drum kit in the corner of his garage - it is for letting off steam and celebrating good deals. Come March Mr Kragh will be hoping to sound out a distinctly African beat.
