Paul Ryan gave Romney camp several years of tax returns

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mitt Romney released two years of his own tax returns to the public but that didn't appear to be enough when he vetted running-mate Paul Ryan and other vice presidential candidates.

The campaign team for Romney, the Republican presidential candidate, reviewed several years of tax returns from Ryan and others, according to the head of Romney's VP search process Beth Myers.

But Romney - a former private equity executive with an estimated net worth of up to $250 million - has refused to publicly release more than two years of tax returns.

The secrecy has led Democrats to say he has something to hide about his vast wealth, which included bank accounts in Switzerland, and in the Cayman Islands and Bermuda, known offshore tax havens.

"Why does an American businessman need a Swiss bank account, or investments in known tax havens, if not to be hiding something?" Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said on "Fox News Sunday."

"Mitt Romney needs to show American voters at least the same number of tax returns that he asked Paul Ryan to show him when he was vetting him for vice president."

Polls show U.S. President Barack Obama has benefited from putting Romney on the defensive over his taxes and wealth, painting him as someone out of touch with middle-class America.

Romney campaign officials declined to comment about the vetting process and how many years of tax returns were required, saying it was meant to be "private and confidential."

It was unclear if Ryan's tax returns, which were stored in a safe in a locked room at Romney's campaign headquarters, will be released to the public.

Tim Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor who was a potential Romney running mate, said he also had to submit several years of tax returns during the search for a Republican vice presidential candidate.

"So more than two?" asked George Stephanopoulos, the host of ABC's "This Week."

"Well, we don't get into the details of the vetting process, but I gave him a bunch of tax returns," Pawlenty replied. "I don't remember the exact number of years."

From Oscar's Olympics to Pistorius' Paralympics

LONDON (AP) ? As he left Olympic Stadium, Oscar Pistorius stopped for a moment and looked back.

The double-amputee runner turned to take in the crowd of 80,000 and reflect on his victory in a four-year fight to compete at the London Games against the world's best able-bodied athletes.

EDITOR'S NOTE: AP Sports Writer Gerald Imray, based in Johannesburg, has been covering double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius' quest to compete against able-bodied athletes at the Olympics for the last two years. A day after the South African ran in the 4x400-meter relay final, Pistorius spoke to Imray about his experiences and what is next.

"It's something I will definitely remember for the rest of my life," Pistorius told The Associated Press on Saturday, thinking back to his debut on the biggest track stage in the world. "It's been absolutely phenomenal. In a way, I'm glad the pressure's over."

But there's still more business for the "Blade Runner" in London.

In a few weeks, the South African will be back at the same stadium on his carbon-fiber blades for the Paralympics. He won't be a sideshow. He'll be the main attraction.

Pistorius is the defending champion in the 100, 200 and 400 meters ? and he'll be expected to win four gold medals this time. He also will be on South Africa's 4x100 relay team.

If he wins them all, he'll go home with more gold than Usain Bolt.

"I've always wanted to be at the Olympics and Paralympics at the same games," Pistorius said, still glowing after running the anchor leg in the 4x400 final Friday.

That's soon to come. He also has "the challenge," as he calls it, of defending his 100-meter title. It is going to be a big challenge, too, because Pistorius probably faces the biggest threat yet to his dominance of disabled running when he lines up for the marquee race.

Since the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, Pistorius has become a 400 specialist in his attempt to compete at the able-bodied Olympics. He also shed about 25 pounds (12 kilograms) to suit the longer distance.

Meanwhile, Paralympic sprinting rivals and single amputees Jerome Singleton of the United States and Jonnie Peacock of Britain have focused solely on the 100 and unseating Pistorius over the short race.

"The 100 is going to be the tough one," Pistorius said. "I've really changed in the last four years. I've dropped a lot of weight to accommodate the efficiency for the 400 meters and the guys have been training hard for that 100. I've got to defend my title there and it's going to be a challenge."

Singleton beat Pistorius at last year's world championships, handing the South African his first defeat in the 100 in seven years. The 19-year-old Peacock broke the world record in the single-amputee class in June at 10.85 seconds. Pistorius' world record for double amputees is 10.91.

A third challenger and another single amputee is South African teammate Arnu Fourie. He also has run impressive times and beat Pistorius over 100 meters back home in March.

It's going to be a challenge, sure, but the 25-year-old Pistorius has gotten used to them over the years.

Bans, court cases, battles to qualify ? and, most recently, a crash by a teammate in the 4x400 relay semifinals this week that almost ended Oscar's Olympics early.

"We won't hopefully have those (dramas) in the future," he said, laughing, outside the athletes village. "This has been one of the most special moments of my life and I'm sure the Paralympics later this month is going to be exactly the same for me."

Then, it'll be time to rest and reflect until next season. And think about what else he can achieve.

"Next year we've got the world championships in Moscow," said Pistorius, who already has a silver medal with South Africa in the 4x400 relay from last year's worlds. "Looking forward to that as well."

Boost to alien status of Nobel-winning quasicrystal

Evidence is mounting that the only known natural form of a bizarre type of crystal known as a quasicrystal originated in space.

Like standard crystals, the atoms of a quasicrystal are ordered, but their arrangement lacks translational symmetry: a shifted copy won't ever quite match its original.

Such a pattern on the atomic scale was long thought impossible, until the Nobel-prizewinning work of Daniel Shechtman of the Technion Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, who was the first to spot an example in an alloy.

Since then, the strange arrangement has also been discovered in a rock dug up in the Koryak mountains in eastern Russia in 1979, which is now part of the collection of the Museum of Natural History in Florence, Italy. Except for this sample, though, all other known quasicrystals had been synthesised in lab environments.

Last July a team of scientists led by Paul Steinhardt of Princeton University trekked across the tundra into the Koryak mountains on a quest to find the source of the naturally occurring quasicrystal. Based on the conditions required for the natural formation of quasicrystals, the team reported on their return evidence that the quasicrystal must have fallen from space.

Now Steinhardt and Bindi report that the 2011 expedition turned up further naturally occurring samples of quasicrystal (pictured above). And the samples back up their previous claim that the quasicrystals come from a 4.5-billion-year-old meteorite that fell to Earth around 15,000 years ago.

What's more, Steinhardt says that the newly found grains are in better condition than the samples that lie in Florence:

Whereas the Florence sample had been pulverized early on and, except for a few micrograins, destroyed and all context lost, here we have a full grain.

His team is now analysing the new samples to see what they might reveal about quasicrystals - and the state of the early solar system.

Rule number one- know your credit score. Nothing is worse than thinking you have a great credit score, only to find out that you do not as the landlord is ripping up the lease in front of you. On the other hand, if you think you have a horrible credit score, but have not had the numbers run for some time, it is better to pull your report and have the actual facts at hand. Whatever you do, don?t guess your credit score. These numbers change every day, and it could be possible that the number is actually better than what you may believe.

Renters can easily pull their own credit score if they are not working with an agent. You can download a free credit report at www.annualcreditreport.com. Credit scores range from 300 to 850. Scores above 700 are considered to be good.

Rule number two- be honest. If you apply for a property, do not let the landlord discover your low credit on their own. If you are willing to let a landlord run your credit, warn them about the possibility of a low score ahead of time. No one likes surprises, especially a landlord.

Rule number three- explain. Set up a face-to-face meeting with the landlord and talk about your circumstances. They may be willing to take certain factors into consideration when making the decision on whether to extend you a lease or not. Matters of high medical bills, divorce, or student loan debt may be deemed lesser offenses from the perspective of a landlord.

If a face-to-face meeting is not possible, try writing a cover letter explaining your credit history. You don?t need to go into too much detail, but let the landlord know how the issues came up, and what you have done to correct them.

There are numerous other techniques a renter can use to persuade a landlord to rent to them.

Try putting down a larger security deposit. While it may be extremely difficult for some people to find extra money to put down towards a deposit, this method may convince a landlord to lease to you. Putting down more money when you sign the lease signals that you are less of a risk.

In addition to the usual letters of reference from your employer, another strategy is to get a letter from your previous landlord indicating that you paid rent on time and were a good tenant. The letter should clearly indicate the name of your previous landlord, along with a contact number in case the current landlord wants to follow up with more questions. You could even go so far as to provide proof of your timely payments by printing out rent-payment stubs or copies of canceled checks for the past two years and submit these with your application.

Although it might take you longer to find a home to rent if you have bad credit, you have a lot of control over the situation as long as you can show why you aren?t as risky a proposition as your credit suggests.

If you have bad credit, you want to demonstrate your credibility to a landlord by providing any evidence that enhances your image as a reliable tenant. Bad credit is deemed a high risk and you have to give them some incentive to do business with you. They don't know you and you are a risk until you can prove otherwise.

Panasonic wants that level of survivability in its SDHC and SDXC cards, and its new UHS-I-level SDAB and SDUB lines are tested for the kind of abuse that could see the camera give up the ghost first. The cards can take the kinds of punishment that we often associate with rugged gear, such as temperatures from -13F to 185F, immersion in 3.3 feet of water for half an hour and the usual steep drops. It's beyond this that the resistance levels become truly exotic: the cards are also built to survive zaps of electricity, proximity to magnets and exposure to X-rays. If it all becomes too much to bear, the design will even fuse on the inside to prevent fire burning the card from within. Those who like what they see will only have to decide whether or not they want the SDAB range's 95MB/s read speeds and 80MB/s writes or are willing to settle for the SDUB line's respective 90MB/s and 45MB/s transfers.
